I hope there are some lever-action gurus out there who can possibly help me out.

I picked up a well loved 1894 carbine three months ago. It was manufactured in 1916 and looked like it had a saddle ring at one time. I would like to get a saddle ring back onto it, but here is my problem. When my friendly local gun store tried to help me out by pulling out a replacement saddle ring and stud, the hole in the receiver was bigger than the stud.

Can anyone help me with this? Did the old winchesters have a bigger threaded hole in 1916 than they did later on? And if so, does anyone have any leads on where I can get a replacement?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes they did have a bigger hole, there may in fact have been a third size too, but I'm not sure on that.
You can haunt ebay for the ring, or possibly post it as wanted in 'equipment exchange' .
I have one with just the stud, no ring, from the era you are looking for. I think mine is 1910. I'd be willing to swap it for the screw/plug, but you'd still have to put a ring in the stud.

John When you say just the stud is it a semi hemispherical piece screwed into the hole. I was looking at one of these and we were wondering if it was a factory installation for carbines ordered without rings. The carbine in question was made in 1914 when sling rings were standard on carbines.

Kind of like a wing bolt with a hole in it.
My 92 Winchester has a different design, with a loop holding the ring. I have seen the stud style complete, and it looks original. I think most of the rings were removed to prevent them rattling during a hunt.

Good info all.

Here is some info I got from a chap down in the states:

======
Best information about Winchesters Mod 94: “Winchester Lever Action Repeating Firearms, Vol. 3, The Models of 1894 and 1895” Arthur Pirkle. North Cape Publications, P.O. Box 1027, Tustin, CA 92781 ncape@ix.netcom.com
Page 50:
The saddle ring stud shank is 3/16 inch long and 1/4 inch in diameter and is threaded 1/4-30 for its entire length.
In the DIXIE GUN WORKS Catalogue, the price (newly made parts for original guns) of the saddle ring and screw stud for the Mod 94 (Art. MP0456) is $ 18.95.

Now I called Western Gun Parts and asked them if they had the "larger" thread ones before I got this info, so I hope its correct, otherwise I may be calling Dixie. Here's hoping.

Be prepared for DGW raping you on Canada shipping. I ordered a $2 screw and got slammed with $17 US S&H. the parcel has a $0.80 US stamp on it when it arrived - I was REALLY pissed off.

I wanted to replace the stud on mine with either a screw, or a stud with a ring, but so far, I've bought several screws that don't fit, and seen a number of complete saddle rings go for rediculous prices on several different auction sites.
I figure I can live with the stud awhile longer.

Got a stud and ring from Western Gun Parts in Edmonton for $30. Asked for the older larger thread, ordered on Thursday, recieved Friday morning. And guess what? It fit....well it did until the threads bumped into the crud in the reciever. Got it in nonetheless, and it is mucho nicer, like being whole again.

I will post some pics tomorrow with the saddle ring cause its great...and better than the originals going for $40-$70 on ebay.

saddle ring

At the risk of a hijack...the inside of the stud on my rifle, where the actual ring goes through the stud...is threaded. What is the purpose of this? I always thought the ring just slopped around in the stud??
