I have a Marlin 1895 guide gun in 45-70. I find the factory sights hard to aquire against a dark background. Does anyone have any experience with ghost ring sights with a fibre optic front? I think that that would be super fast and accurate enough for 150 yd shots. Opinions?

I have the Ashley ghost-ring-rear/white-line-front set-up on my guide gun. Get about 2 or 2 1/4 inches at 100 yards with it, which is essentially the same as when I put on a low power scope. Not quite as a good as a scope in bad lighting conditions, though. I'm sure the fibre optic front sight would give you similar results to the post.

I prefer aperture sights over the stock buckhorns.

Check out skinnersights.com they make a great set up for Marlins, lightweight, accurate and fairly inexpensive. I have this set up on my .357 and it is the cats azzz will probably buy more for my other Marlins soon.

Thanks leverjunkie. Thats pretty much exactly what I wanted for a rear sight. Got one coming. Now to order a red fibre optic front...........

also, should I remove the buckhorn and fit a filler into the dovetail, or just fold it down?

To my eye it looks better to remove the buckhorn sight and put a filler in the dovetail, but from a practical point of view, if it isn't there you can't use it should something happen to the ghost ring.

Here are a couple of considerations. A receiver sight like a ghost ring requires a higher front sight than the sight on the barrel. If the front sight is not high enough you will shoot high with the ghost ring set as low as it will go.

Our rifles get hard use up here so this might not apply to you. We found that fiber optic sights were too fragile and have pretty much given up on them. A pal of mine has gone so far as to mount a reflex sight on his Marlin after the fiber optic sight failed. I had a brass rectangular post made for my .375. This sight is pretty cool because it contrasts dark against a light background and light against a dark background.

If fiber optic sights arent very durable, what else is fairly eye catching? The gun mostly rides in a scabbard, or in the back of my work truck. The factory white dot just doesnt have enough contrast for my eye.
