1895 Lee Metford Cavalry Carbine MkI

Mr. B_noser. Not doubting you sir. I thank you for this. I have a keen interest in Canadian issued Metfords and Enfields. I seem to be gathering them up. Mostly sporters which become resto projects , but the curious butt stock info remains.

Any provenance of where an arm has been is priceless to history buffs.

I have to get my head around the organisational structure of these batteries. I understood that artillery batteries were at that time designated by letter not number. I may well be wrong, the protocol might have changed. Hence my questions.

You stock disk being stamped would be clear readable info. My carbine has info stamped into the wood, not quite as high definition but I still believe it to be an 'E'.

I'll post pics of some of my butt stocks.

You seem well informed. Can you direct me to a source for this info?

englishman,
I did not mean to imply that I thought you were questioning my statements - although it would have been perfectly fine to do so.
The info regarding models and quantities delivered to Canada came mostly from another collector who I believe to be very knowledgable on the subject. He was also kind enough to share with me info he had on other Canadian LMC1s that had surfaced. The information regarding the Royal Canadian Artillery came directly from their website - artillery.net. As I understand it - the Permanent Force Field Batteries did have letter designations. However, the Active Militia Field Batteries had number designations. No 8 "Gananoque" Field battery is on the list for Jan. 1,1895.

I look forward to seeing your photos.

The Royal Canadian Artillery website - artillery.net lists the No 15 "Shefford" Field Battery on the roster of Active Militia Field Batteries as of Jan. 1, 1895. I think they may have been stationed in or near Granby PQ.

Hope this helps fill in some of the blanks.

You lie, you didn't pick that up, you stole it out from under me.

I'm glad you got it though. Nice rifle for a great price.

What are you going to do with that Kropatschek carbine? Are you tired of it yet???
