Does anyone know if there would be a significant muzzle velocity difference between the 18.5'' and the 22'' barrel? I am trying to decide between the two and would like to know if it is going to be a compromise with the shorter barrel.

Thanks

Yup...probably 100fps....Have you seen the Marlin MXLR(or something like that)...24" barrel I think!! I have the Cowboy 45/70 and wouldn't trade it for any rifle(26" barrel)

My 2 cents

I always thought the beauty of those guns as hunting rifles is that they are so quick handling. So the short barrel makes more sense to me.

I think it probably would be a non-issue especially if shooting hand-loads.

A lot of shooters will hit their own level of recoil tolerance before maximum velocities are reached even with the 18 1/2" barrel.

I shot both before buying, while the animal you're aiming at will probably never notice the velocity difference between the two barrel lenghts I sure did when it came to muzzle jump, shot recover, and getting back on target for a quick follow up. with the full power (350gr @2150fps chrony'd) loads there was no contest, the longer barrel and pistol grip style grip on the 1895 made it far better ballenced then the 1895G IMHO. after some practice i'm able to control the rifle quite well and spot my hits. doubt I would have had such luck with the little 1895G, although it makes a more attractive package if storage space and packing ability are in question. (although i've never had a problem with my 1895MR in those respects.).

either way, hard to go wrong with a marlin lever gun.

I've got the .444 guide and enjoy the compactness and quick handeling of it. I got it for close-in brush hunting (up to 100 yds) so the short barrel is a + for me. Of course if your throwing a 265 gr (400 in 45/70) bullet, whats a 100 fps matter?

I own both the GG and the 22" version, with hanloads I get about 50-100 FPS differance between the two.

405g loads are going around 1850 FPS out of the 22".
