1895 XLR 45/70 (JM)...to chop or not?

Have a nice JM 1895 XLR and am thinking of having it cut down to 18.5”. Curious on folks thoughts? I already have several other 1895 outfitters (45/70, 444) as well as a recent GSBL that I am happy with. Like the idea of shorter stainless version in JM as opposed to SBL remlin. Thoughts? Yes or No? Length? Also would consider selling if someone can’t stand to see it chopped.

I had mine cut down to 18.5". I like it. Nowadays I might look for an SBL instead though.

I am not a stickler for folks modifying there rifles to their liking, especially your rifle. Sure it’s a nice JM marlin, but it’s not like you would be cutting up an historic PCMR or a yellowboy.

All that said, you already have several guide length 45/70’s, so your not exactly filling a niche. I would sell it and buy what your wanting. How about a 45/70 Alaskan take down. Surely that would suit you needs, no?

^^^^Simple sensible answer. If I wanted a Chevy instead of my Ford I wouldn't destroy a perfectly good car try to make it into something it isn't, I would sell the Ford and buy the Chevy.

The same could be said back when PCMR and yellowboys were more common. The XLR series, “JM” specifically we’re only made for 2 years. Tough to say decades from now if they will have a higher historical value.

I’ll wager the 444 and 35 rem’s will, as they are the only stainless factory rifles in those calibers I’m aware of, and were discontinued before the Remington takeover.

The 444 is coming back, so you might be able to get one of them in stainless again. Not sure exactly what configurations they'll be available in though.

Unless you just love the idea of custom work, I'd leave that gun as-is and look for an SBL. The newer Remlins are reputed to have most of their problems corrected, so as long as you can personally handle and inspect one that might be the way to go. If you absolutely must have a JM-stamped gun, keep your eyes peeled and eventually you can find one of the earliest SBL's...the best of both worlds, IMHO.

I have one in 35 Remington, and it felt like I was walking with a flag pole!
I had it shortend to 21”, and it feels much better to carry now! Love it!
