1895 XLR 45/70 (JM)...to chop or not?

Have a nice JM 1895 XLR and am thinking of having it cut down to 18.5”. Curious on folks thoughts? I already have several other 1895 outfitters (45/70, 444) as well as a recent GSBL that I am happy with. Like the idea of shorter stainless version in JM as opposed to SBL remlin. Thoughts? Yes or No? Length? Also would consider selling if someone can’t stand to see it chopped.

Most folks find that rifle balance enhances or detracts from rifle handling more than length alone. If we assume that the barrel weighs about an ounce per inch, and you intend to reduce the length from 24" to 18.5", first add a 6 ounce weight to the toe of the buttstock and see if you like the way the rifle handles. You might see an advantage with a less severe adjustment; IMHO, these rifles are at their best with 21"-22" barrels.

I would cut it. If you’re using an optic little is gained from the long barrel in 45/70. 18.5-20” is perfect for those rifles in my opinion. Do what suits you. Preserve it for what? The next guy? People are afraid to use anything these days as it might affect the resale value, it’s like not pounding your wife’s pussy to save it for some future admirers, cut that barrel

I had a customized 1st year 1895GS that came with the ported barrel. Hated the blast! I rebarred with a Beaven King barrel and after trying a 23" barrel, I cut it to 21 and it is perfect. My stock was 14.5 lop and I agree about balance. 21 made my rifle balance.

I had an old beat up terdy-turdy with no rezidewawl value and wuzz try'in tuh git a
gunsmith to chawpper down.

…………..:rey2...…….dizz bee wutt I gartzs.

You can't cut it to 16" only gun manufacturers can make barrels that short.

Not exactly correct, if the same manufacture say Marlin, made a 16.25" trapper barrel in the same caliber, you can legally have it cut to the same length.

If the front sight is reattached and it looks identical to what the manufacture made, it would be almost impossible to prove it had actually been cut and re-crowned.

Nothing beats a 16.25" Trapper barrel in my opinion. Easy to maneuver, lightweight all while handling like a dream.

I hope Ruger/Marlin makes a 16.25" stainless laminate trapper in a 444 Marlin or 45 Long Colt. They would be absolutely beautiful!.......:)

Sorry for resurrecting an old post........:)

You have proof that this is fact? As i read the regs if you MODIFY shorter than 18.5 its prohib no matter who or what company produces a barrel at 16.5

As per should you cut it......its your rifle do what makes you happy. I dont own any rifles for the purpose of selling to someone else so all my guns get outfitted exactly as I want them.

Any law a corrupt liberal or any other dictatorship makes means nothing. In saying this, I'm not saying you should break any laws, just or unjust.

I am saying:

It’s nearly impossible to prove a barrel has been cut, re-crowned and the front sight re-attached.
The gun you make better be exactly as the trapper manufactured one.

Some gun owners are afraid of the boogie man, I don’t happen to be afraid of a corrupt, lying, cheating, stealing government like Trudy currently runs.

Everyone has to make their own choice in life.
Having a 16.25” Trapper lever action rifle certainly should not raise any eyebrows.

Trudy is a liar, thief, ###ual predator, scumbag and a dictator. Do you see him charged with any crimes? Nope!

I’m sure a 16.5” Trapper would not get you arrested as long as there is the exact same model that was made by that same manufacturer.

I've seen this once before. All that happened was the Marlin 30-30 went for double what it should have…..:)

I've owned all other configurations at one time or another, but luv the CB the best.

Mine is a later production Remlin and runs like a Swiss watch!

Each to his own, I guess as this posting was from 2018.

The xlr is clearly stamped XLR on the barrel. A quick search reveals that the xlr was never made with a 16" barrel therefore its quite simple and quick to identify it as modified. Im not saying the laws are right or even make sense but i would never advise someone do something that could get them in serious trouble. The consequences could be dire.

I had one of the 1985 SDT rifles with 16.25" barrel, and it was handy, but recoil with full power 350gr loads was stiff enough, that I would not fire more than 6-9 rounds at a session , or I would get a headache. With the 300gr factory loads, recoil wasn't an issue.
