Good day to all. I have a 1896 gew 91 nm 8mm rifle. I can not find any info on this at all. I have been useing this as my deer rifle, since it was handed down to me. I would like to know if it has been alterd and in what way. If any body should have information of any kind or photos. I would be very greatful Thanks very much Don

She should, or at one point, would have looked like this:

Gewehr 91s were issued primarily to artillery units. The stacking hook assisted them in the fact that carbines could be stacked in pyramids of three and kept out of the mud.

Pictures of yours would be of great interest as I am hunting for my own Gewehr 91 example.

Thanks nabs. For responding by the looks of your photo mine has been alterd a bit. I will post a photo tommorow. The front wood is missing up to the ring band and it has a fixed peep sight that looks like it was done at the factory.

Oh man, I will make another trip to the lock up and post some pics of the weapons down there. One of the weapons brought back from Yugo is a gorgeous Gew 91 with unit markings. Small issue though. Some Yugo gangster wanna be cut the butt stock down into a pistol grip. There is also a M1 Carbine that had the same thing done to it. Barrel cut right down to the gas system and turned into a pistol grip.

Must you torture me again ? :D I would love to own a gewehr 91 in original military configuration. I find the stacking hook to be a very attractive feature. Not to forget, I have some 88 style en-bloc clips that need a firearm to work with.

Not commonly found and it may cost quite a bit as well. The metal parts are probably even more scarce I'm afraid. Your best location for searching would be the U.S. unless you are fortunate to find someone in Canada with all the parts you require.

Thanks again nabs what exactly would i be looking for, the barrel bolt and every thing match there matches. and it is a very good shooter. If i started with the wood would a kar 88 carbine fit

I can't say for certain as I do not own examples of either a Kar 88 or a Gew 91. The Kar 88 seems to be more common than the Gew 91 so your chances of finding a Kar 88 stock are much better. You also won't have to worry about looking for a stacking hook. The carbine won't be really correct for the restoration but she will be really close.

It looks like your Gew. 91 is missing the barrel jacket and a front sight blade is added onto the barrel. That blade would have to come off in order to mount the proper barrel jacket. Next, you would have to look for a nose cap that fits along with the nose cap retaining screw. I believe it is similar to a SMLE nose cape set up with how it fits onto the barrel and screws into position. It looks like you have the rear band so that is good.

It also appears your carbine has a peep sight placed on the receiver. I'm not sure what you would want to do this piece once you acquired all the proper parts. There also seems to be some sort of swivel attachment to the barrel just forward of where the wood has been cut ? If that is true and that piece is physically attached to the barrel, your odds of restoration are severely hampered.

I'm not sure if you wish to go down this route as you would probably expend more money than what she may be worth in the end. She sounds like a great shooter that can put meat on the table so you may wish to keep her as she is.

Thanks Nabs. Yes your right very good shooter accuret as old heck for fixed sights. The swivel on the front is not attached. The front part of the stock is cracked so i was hopeing to replace it. I figured if i was doing that i would see what it would take to bring it back to ariganel. Sorry for the spelling. It looks like it would take alot of cash and time to restore. So i think i will try to replace the stock and keep it the way the older guys had it. and keep shooting deer with it. Thanks again for all your help. And if you can think of any thing or body were or what kind of stock to put on it that would be great.

My pleasure. If you come across a full military Gew.91 or Kar. 88 in the near future, let me know as I would love to have one beside my Gewehr 88.

Oh, I forgot to ask, how do you charge the magazine on your Gew. 91 ? The original setup was with a modified Mannlicher style en-bloc clip that held five rounds. The whole clip would be pushed down into the magazine and when the last round was chambered, the clip would fall out the bottom of the magazine in most cases. I am curious to hear if the magazine was modified on your Gew. 91.

Yes your exactly right about the clip. And the magazine was not modified. I curently have five of them. if you ever need one. As well, i have and will be looking. I will let you know. As i dont need the full set up now, that i am going to keep the rifle in the same condition with a new stock, if i can find one. Its funny thoe the rear sight looks like it has always been there.
