Does anybody load 190gr Sierra HPBT's over Varget for their .308Win? I have a rifle on the way and am hoping to use these 190's over Varget (I have a of stock of Varget and heard good things about the 190's) and am wondering what kind of real world velocities (not just what the reloading manuals say) have been acheived. It'll be through a 24" tube with a non-commercial chamber. I'm hoping to send these to 1000 yards and stay in the realm supersonic flight....Any experiences out there?

Consider switching powders. I shoot 2598 fps with 208's. 24" barrel. Medium load.

Supersonic speeds isn't an issue well past 1000yards.

Is 46gr of RL17 under a 208AMAX compressed? or nearly compressed? That seems pretty fast for a 208gr out of a .308Win. No issues with pressure?

I plan on testing several different powders, Varget it just the one I have on hand in quantity. RL15 and RL17 seems to be fairly hard to obtain around here. My list of bullets to try consist of 178, and 190gr Sierra's as well as 178 and 208 AMAX. Who knows, I might even try some VLD's or Hybrids down the road.

Based on the velocity calculation on exbal ballistics and my 500m elevation adjustments, my load of 43.5 gr Varget with the 190 SMK in my custom throated 308 I am getting 2675 fps. Lapua brass and BR-2 primers. It's a safe load in my gun, work up to it in yours.

R-17 + 190 SMK + 24 inch barrel = 2700+ fps, it will make it easy to 1000 metres... The key word here is R-17, amazing powder... I was pushing a 208 Amax + R-17 out of my 20 inch Nemesis barrel just south of 2600 fps with stellar accuracy... JP.

It is compressed even loading very long. My rem (and most rems I've seen) have very long chambers. That being said I've crushed them down to 2.85-2.9ish for mag feeding and they work.

It's a warm load but not super hot. Obviously approach with caution.

RL17 is becoming very hard to find. Much worse than varget.

Happy iv'e got 8 pounds of each R-15/ R-17, i am good for many years... JP.

Well in that case I will keep an eye out for RL15 and RL17. Even when powder wasn't as hard to find, I don't remember seeing any of those powders around this city. I am sure there likely is, but like you mentioned, is going to be very hard to find. I guess I will have to start with the Varget and make something work. I agree, most Rem's are chambered pretty long, and I don't think I will have that added leeway with this rifle. It's likely going to be a fairly tight chamber, right down to spec. ATRS is building the rifle for me. I could have it throated a little longer, but they recommend against it, should the the rifle not like any particular bullet type, for any random reason. And when it comes to building rifles, they have way more experience than me so I take their advice.

Perhaps, if any of you gents would care to give up a 1/2lb or 1lb of these powders, I could give it a test....but not likely will anyone be parting out their stash....

Thay why, i got all i could, i was told there were no more canadian distributor for the Reloader stuff, 18 months ago, now, this could have changed but i doubt it... JP.

Is Rick putting on a rock creek barrel? A friend has one and it shoots EVERYTHING! To the point that it annoys me. If its anything like his you could shoot 175 Nosler custom comps and be really satisfied.

I was originally planning on putting on a Rock Creek barrel, but then everything went weird in the States. Rock Creek go so backlogged with the sudden influx of orders that they suspended orders until further notice so that they could attempt to reduce their backlog. For this reason I decided to go with a Broughton. I was reassured that Broughton are top quality (and I believe it), which was backed up by all the of my personal research, which was extensive.

So reading between the lines you said "No I would not like to share my stash"....
