I have had this rifle for about 15 years now shoots great and have been tossing the idea around of either selling it , or re-barreling it to 35 Whehlen and using it more than I do now.But I was just curious of the valve and if it is worth anything as is ? it has been sporterized, it's in a different wood stock that is bedded and there is also a timmney adjustable trigger on it .The gun is in good shape and functions well. What is the best thing to do? Leave it as is or send it to a gunsmith?

In sporterized finish, I'd say the 03's price could run $350-500. The fact that its in nice shape, has a custom trigger, and an after market stock (Herter's?) might enhance the price slightly, but not to a purist. If it shoots well, and you like the .30/06 cartridge, there would seem to be little point in changing it. Rebarreling to .35 Whelen represents a significant investment which does not increase the value of the rifle, although it might become more suitable for your purposes. I would keep it myself, as I like '03 Springfrields and I like the .30/06 cartridge, and you won't be that much richer by selling it.
