1903 help please

I am trying to help a friend out who has a 1903 A1 rifle manufactured in 1941, Remington action, and the barrel is Springfield and HS marked. Does the HS marked barrel sound correct for the year and model? This is way out of my scope, I am grateful in advance for any assistance

If full length military barrel there should be a flaming bomb proof mark and a date like 8-41 near the muzzle.

HS means High Standard. These were produced as replacement barrels for both the M1903 and 1903A3 rifles. The barrels are marked HS plus month and date behind the front sight base. Springfield Armory barrels are marked SA plus date and month in the same location. An original barrel for a Rem M1903 would be marked RA plus month and date.

Maybe it's a typo, but Remington never built an A1. Do you mean A3? As far as as a High Standard barrel on a Remington action. Why not? Typical arsenal refurbished model... Your chances of finding a correct RA barrel with proper month/ year to the serial number are quite slim. Sorry to re-hatch old post, but I've been traveling lots & didn't see this one...

Perhaps the seller means an M1903 or M1903M?

Yep, could be... Off topic a little, but the funny thing is most A3's & A4's are also referred to as 'Springfields' yet they never built one...
