1903 Price Check (pics)

Yes, it is a Remington 1903. The stock is a "scant" stock, commonly seen on WW2 production. Original to the rifle? US GI stock? I don't know.

Most "scant" stocks are post-war replacements from arsenal rework. I've never seen one reproduced, repros are usually straight grip or C-stocks.

Twenty years back, there were lots of ads for the scant grip stocks. They weren't as popular or pricey as the straight stocks or the C type stocks.

New old stock "scant" stocks were available from IMA and Sarco as few as five years ago. The same goes for upper hand guards. I bought a half dozen of them complete with cross bolts. A few of them had slight stains and some still had bits of wax paper on them. None had any BLO or stampings. The stocks offered later were reproductions at twice the price of the original replacement units. A few years previous to the scant stock offerings they also offered unissued new old stock straight stocks and C type stocks. All had crossbolts. The scant stocks were always thicker in cross section at the wrist that I saw. Only the straight grip stocks were on the thin side and even the C type stocks were heavier but not as heavy as the scant models.

It has no relationship to this piece, but there was just a Remington 03A3 on the EE which looked to be in fine shape with original looking parts incl the barrel. It was listed for $1600 and has now been sold. Springfields of any kind in original or rebuilt military configuration are scarce and seem to be in high demand.
