1903 Ross MkI! Update July 14

Will be taking lots of pics at the Shoot. Full event details at www.btsa.ca/matches. Navigate to the list of matches and drop down to July 6-7. I'll be shooting my Mk III but will have the Mk II and the Cadet out as well.

Other battle rifles coming out too.

Wow, the wood grain on that stock is fantastic.. almost brings a tear to my eye picturing some fellah hacksawing it to death.

You've done some very good work. And yes, be sure to take lots of pictures at the ross shoot!

Work got in the way of the Ross shoot unfortunately. On a positive note I found some time to work on the MkI* today!

Switch has been reproduced! Hopefully this is up to everyone else's standard. This was my first attempt at this type of piece and all I have is a 7x10 Harbor Freight lathe, bench grinder and hand files etc so the knurling isn't very fine and it may not have perfect dimensions and my machining looks fairly rough but it is there now and one more of the unobtainable parts has been built. The rest of the parts except the rear sling swivel and fore end extension will be here in a few more days.

I tried oil bluing for the first time on this piece as well. Other than one run over spot I think it looks ok.

For the sizing of it I measured the height of the stock on rifles in photos I found on the net, as well as the dimensions of their cut off levers. Little bit of math and I think it should be close. I guessed on the thread size but it seemed to work out. To get the timing right I threaded it and then made a small grape on the top of the threads with my mig then lightly filed it back until it tightened at the right spot. I squared the end by hand in a vice and then turned the piece down in my lathe. Was a neat project.

I haven't been after this one in a bit. Some other things have taken over, project wise. I bought a duplicator and have been working on my stock making skill. I don't think the duplicator is coming in from the woodworking shed to the garage this winter, so the rifle will be completed sometime then. I found a pic of a Ross MkI with a MkII nosecap in TRRS so that is the plan as I have one of those nose caps here. It won't take me long to complete it once I get at it, a few days probably.

I'll post pics when it gets there.

So who picked up that 1903 with the slightly shortened wood that was on the EE for a C note a few weeks back?

Well, few years in the making but I'm happy with the results. In TRRS there is a photo of a MkI with a MkII rifle's nosecap. Legitimate enough for the Good Book then its good enough for me, so I used a MkII nosecap. I built a new fore end and doweled it on. I tried using a different technique for staining this one because I wanted the color to closely match. Obviously it'll take me a while to fill the pores in the wood but the color is there at least. Hope you guys enjoy the results.

Yes, it's beautiful. I love the deep rich colour of that stock. Once I get organized I'll have to order up the small rear top wood for my MK II* now that I know you're making them or soon to be making them.

The first set of * top wood will be interesting, its very very dainty. I'm happy to be able to build it soon. Thinking they will not be doable on the duplicator though, too light. It'll be all hand built, for sure.

Thanks for the positive comments guys.

I'm really hoping to find work where I can be home in the evenings again soon, there is a pile of stock work to be done and I haven't had time to tackle it. I've been in camp all but about 15 days since the end of September, so all of my spare time has been dedicated to my family. This was the first time I've spent in my own shop in months.

Thank heavens for guys like you that persist. I have several old Ross rifles, but only one M10 in full wood. It has been "refinished", but can likely be taken back to a decent looking rifle.

Good work. Keep it up. :)
