1905E Ross to 44 Mag

interesting, never thought of using a magnum case.

I own rifles in 7mmRM, 300WM, 325WSM, 338WM, and 458WM so I have those covered and have spare brass kicking around.

a 303 case based round will need to have the shoulders blown out in some sort of improved chamber to take care of the erosion.
 
My original thoughts, post #9, were around the 303 Br for the new chambering. The problem with using the 303 Br case is that not only is the existing chamber corroded, but it is also 80 thousandths of an inch bigger at the base than the 303.

Now I am thinking the best route in a rebore to 35 would be a 358 Norma Mag. That will certainly clean up the bore and most of the chamber.

Ron Smith has done a lot of reboring to various 358 calibers that I know of, everything from 35 Remington to 358 Norma Mag. The last one I was personally involved with was a 7mm Rem Mag to 358 Norma with a gain twist.

You might wait a while, but the rifle is not of much use as is, and Ron is a master at this work.

Friend of mine here has a 35-303 that works like a charm. The chambering is the original case, not improved, and it feeds like a fat boy at a buffet.

Having suggested the 35-303 Imp in an earlier post (#9), I just realized that the 280 Ross chamber base is much bigger than the 303 Br, around 80 thousandths, so that one won't work.

It's also and bigger than the 35 Winchester. Hmmm...., well there would nothing wrong with the 280 case necked up to 35 cal. :)

The .280 Ross rim diameter is about .560, or only .020 larger than .303. As such the Ross can handle any magnum cartridge, and even has the bolt stroke to fit a .338 Lapua into the action.

Roger that, and many Ross rifle have been rebarrelled to belted magnum cartridges. If you read my post again you will see I was referring to the 280 base being much bigger than the 303 base, not the rims.

That is why I think the 358 Norma Mag might be the easiest route to go if reboring, and want a 35 caliber. If going to a new barrel, and can turn a 1:3 thread barrrel shank, then there is a host of possibilities.

Ok, time to revisit this thread.

I finally got around to testing the cut down military barrel and its in worse shape then the factory sporter, getting split cases at the shoulder.

the factory sporter is a very thin barrel and I think I'll just leave that barrel as is and look at modifying the military cut down, still not a lot of metal there with the 3TPI shank, so using it as a sleeve or nut is a bit sketchy.

rebore to 35 Rem sounds interesting.
 
The magazine issue could likely be solved by using a Desert Eagle magazine and adapting it to either fit in the mag well or get more creative and have it protrude through the floorplate and be interchangeable.
 
I have often thought of a .35 conversion. I have a serviceable but nondescript 1905R, and a take-off Mk. II barrel. Have the service barrel rebored to .35 for .35/.303. Should go right on.
 
The 1905R is a lightweight rifle, and recoil in .303 is noticeable... A .35 might be thumper at both ends.
