1911 .22 Conversion kits

After a really, really long time, I finally have a 1911 on the way! I've shot a lot of different guns, and this will be my first 1911 .45 a Kimber Warrior. I'm considering a .22 kit that can handle bulk pack Walmart or Can tire ammo, and not the fancy CCI stuff. I'm also wanting it to be fairly accurate so I can shoot to 30 yards or so. Any suggestions?
 
I just put on a Kimber .22 Conversion Kit on my Norinco 1911 frame, and it handles Win 333's fairly reliably.
I can also use my GSG 1911-22 clips, when I only load 5 rds. at a time.
With more than that, it experiences too many FTF's.

Actually I have had two one of which is brand new and untried.

My first which I sold a few months ago was an STI branded unit made by Tactical Solutions. This is a beautifully crafted piece that seemed to prefer CCI Blazer. I think you will find all of the conversions fussy ammo wise. I had and sold six magazines that did require some "tuning" before they worked well. The Tactical Solutions people were fantastic in helping get that issue resolved. The mags are expensive at about $70 each.

This unit is available now from Freedom Ventures. I don't know what the mag cost is.

I just got a Bob Marvel designed Night Hawk Custom. It's on the gun but I haven't shot it yet. I bought mine from Ellwood Epps. I also bought extra mags which are "fantastic plastic" and half the cost of the aluminum ones by TS. Time will tell how they work. I'll send you a range report once I get out there with it and have a few rounds under my belt. I'll take it to Texas with me for Steel Challenge.

Both these units are substantially more robust IMO than the Kimber offering but more expensive.

BTW you can buy CCI Blazer from sponsors at about the same cost as the Federal bulk. Feel free to PM me once you get closer or if you want more information.

I would recommend a complete GSG. Some can be ammo picky but you should be able to find a bulk ammo it likes.

Mine like Cdn tire blazer and Rem GB

If you are getting nosedive malfunctions, try a high mag release from EGW or similar.
They take some of the play out.
 
I have a real deal Colt .22 conversion unit that I use on a Springfield Armoury frame when not shooting it with the .45ACP top-end.

The Colt units work great but have to be kept super clean to be reliable as they have the 'floating chamber'. When it gets gummed up, especially if using .22 ammo that is a bit waxy, then shooting is done until after the next thorough cleaning session.

Cool thing about it though is it works 100% with the GSG 1911 .22lr magazines! [Which are relatively inexpensive & plentiful compared to Colt .22 conv mags].

Anyway, I also have a complete GSG 1911 .22 lr pistol that I also love.

Personally, I'd just go with a complete GSG 1911 .22 lr but as a second choice, would source a GSG 1911 .22 lr conversion unit for your 1911 pistol.

I've used .22lr conversion kits in the past but in the end always sold them and bought a complete dedicated .22lr piece. YMMV
 
I own a kimber .22 kit and I really like it. If I were to do it over again I would get an sti or nighthawk kit. you want something where only part of the slide reciprocates, kinda like a hamerelli. even when its aluminum, the kimber and gsg slides are too massive to cycle well with the recoil energy of a .22. I have to keep my thumb from touching the slide for it to function reliably.
