I'm thinking of doing a conversion to .40. What is the breech face difference btw the .45 and .40? Can the conversion be done by simply changing out the barrel?

I don't have the exact measurements but the.40 is smaller & would require a smaller breech face. I went through this a couple of years ago & finally got a .400 Corbon barrel which is necked down ( and strengthened ) .45 brass.

The breech face isn't the problem... it's the position of the extractor... on the .45acp version of the slide it won't reach the .40's rim, at least not reliably.

My 1911 in .45, .400 Corbon & .22LR. .45 to .400 Corbon is a simple barrel change.
