I've a longer term itch to scratch that feels 1911 Commander-sized in 9mm

Who makes ones that are worth considering? No boutique brands - those are beyond my needs.

I know SAM - I really don't want another SAM, unless it was a polished stainless one

STI has the Spartan IV and Ranger II

???

There doesn't seem to be a whole mess of choice under, say $1200 for 9mm shorties, unless I'm looking under all of the wrong rocks.

Spartan VI....I have one in .45 and it kicks ass. Bull barrel (no bushing), reverse plug, very accurate and nice shooting.

Just curious what the issue with the SAM is/was. I've got a 44/45 sized itch and was considering a SAM to scratch it with when the wife goes back to work in the Spring....

Some folks have reported that the SAM's are out of spec and won't take aftermarket parts. I have a SAM Omega and since I started using good mags (Wilson) it has run great. I'd get another, though STI's are much nicer.

No issue with the SAM for me, really - I have the omega. Just none of their shorty 9mm's really appeal to me, and the matte blued finish isn't a favourite either.
I shot a fellows brand new Stainless SAM Commander once and it was quite nice.

The STI Ranger is advertised as blued, and the Spartan as parked. I also like that the Ranger doesn't have a big billboard roll mark on the slide, but as to whether that's worth a few hundred more, who knows? Maybe if it comes on sale. I'm in no rush. I want to modify the Omega a bit and get the sear cleaned up then decide whether it's a keeper.

I prefer .45, but see the value in shooting 9, even as a reloader (throw away the brass when shooting outdoors for one thing, instead of hunting for the .45s). 9mm in a Commander length pistol just might be a bit more entertaining than it is in a full length.

I have owned Ranger II's in both .45 and 9mm. The 9mm was one of my all-time favorite handguns. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I only sold mine to buy a Trojan in 9mm, but I can honestly say that I liked the Ranger II better. It shoots very well. And with Tripp Research 10 round mags, it is the perfect package!

As a side note, I liked my 9mm Ranger so much that I shot my Black Badge course with it. It ran flawlessly the whole course.

How did the feel of the Ranger compare with the longer Trojan?

I know that I found the .45 commander to balance very nicely. I can't compare the feel when firing because I wasn't shooting my own ammo in the other fellows gun.

I liked the balance of the Ranger II better than the longer Trojan. But, like you, I generally like the overall feel of a Commander better than a Government length.

Commander lengh guns tend to be a little snappier and have a bit more muzzle flip than their longer counterparts, but STI's RecoilMaster system smooths out the recoil and allow for quick follow up shots.

My .02c on the subject.

Myself I am having fun with the IPSC classic division, I have used a 9mm Ranger ll for 10K rounds, and recently switched to a govt length Trojan .40 for the last 2k rounds. Still keeping the ranger as a backup/fun gun.
Ranger in 9mm has no recoil if you're holding on to it, I reload my 9mm around 135-137PF, because when I switch from my major PF .40 it feels soft anyways.
Ranger has way better pointability than the Trojan, 1 inch shorter sight radius really get's you pointing. 20+ yards shot require a little more discipline to squeeze the shot if you're in a hurry, 1 inch shorter makes a difference.

My first 1000 rounds with the ranger I had many failures, my last 9000 rounds I have not had a single one. This involved replacing my hollow point ammo for FMJ, and changing my cobra mags for metal form at the time. Metal forms are a beast, they are cheap to buy from brownells, perform flawlessly, nice 10 rounders with big plastic basepad.
With the service I have had at Tripp research lately, I cannot diss them though. If you go Cobra mags and have failures, email them and ask for advice instead of switching mag brands like I have, they have corrected my feeding issues in my .40, even the non-mag related stuff.

Recoil master, I hate them. Recoil feels like 2 stage. You think it's recoiling a certain way and midway thru it it changes speed, it sucks to efficiently manage this. I use a full length guide rod that I have cut to length, and use 11# springs with 11 coils cut off so they don't bind in the sorter slide. Feels like 8# when all is done, and tracks really nice.

Good info again, thanks guys.

I just shoot casually. Lazy bullseye style for the most part - for me a 1911 is a one handed gun. It kinda disappears if I wrap 2 around it lol.

So I suppose that unless I find something a bit more pretty, I will look into STI, bide my time, wait a few paydays, and watch for sales, then decide whether the Ranger is $X00 nicer than the Spartan (certainly has a bit more curb appeal)

I'll have a Commander in .45 some day as well, and I know that there are near endless options for that. I do like the classic looks of the Colt, however.

Thanks for this thread, I was just pondering who made a commander in 9mm. I'm looking for an economical start into the 1911 platform. Norinco didn't make a 9mm commander did they?
