Short version; Finally bought a 1911 in 9mm and I'm going to need more magazines to do a holster course. Came with 2 Mec-Gar (I think) 9 round mags with nice bump plates. This is my first 1911. Should I stick to 9 round mags or is there a reliable 10 round magazine out there? Related question; How many mags do you recommend when doing a club-level holster course?

I'm off to watch the 21 videos YT has on this topic, but I give a lot more credit to people not getting paid for clicks/views.

Thanks,

If it is ipsc some stages are 32 rounds so 4 mags minimum 5 is better 6 is nice as you can just use a mag as a stripper. As for reliable 10 rounds yes they exist. Dawon precision, Wilson combat should work well.

Tripp Cobra and Dawson are virtually the same and run flawlessly for 10 rounders. Had bad luck with Wilson mags that had the plastic insert in the spine and not sure if they still sell them. Avoid them if they do.

I've had 10 rd Mec-Gar in 9mm, and have 2 10 rd 45 Auto mags. The 9mm 10 rd was my best mag right out of the box. My 45's are still "new", and have really strong springs, 10 rds not so good at this point, fine with 8, and I expect that to improve as the spring softens.

I had Tripp's and Wilson's on my STI Rangemaster and Colt Trophy.
Wilson's on my new Dan Wesson.
No problem whatsoever.
As for IPSC, like JBD said, 5 on your belt plus one in your pocket as a stripper.

I run the Brownells 10rd 9mm mags. They are the right price and very well made. Better than my Kimber 9rds for sure.

I bought 3 last year at first (they are $59US for a set of 3) used them all this summer (about 1500 rounds between the 3) without a single issue.

I bought 12 more in august/september. All shipped from Brownells in the states, all 5 shipments of 3 came delivered with no issues. I should mention that these mags are stainless steel, and have a black finish with a polymer base pad that work perfect with a mag well. PM me if you want some pictures of the mags, and pics with them in the gun for reference.

Can these mags be ordered direct from the states or do the have dealers up in Canada?

Double Tap Sports is a CGN sponsor and lists them on their site, but are out of stock. Maybe contact them about their next re-supply.

I have also bought direct from Tripp Research (USA) but they will only ship 2 at a time, I believe this is due to export restrictions.

I don't do 10 rounds 9mm nor 8 rounds 45 in 1911, but give it a try. Who knows, maybe you will have more luck than I?

All my 9mm are 10s and 45s are 8s (well except the ones that actually came with the guns) and I have never had an issue.
I even have a couple 10 round 45s but they just look stupid sticking out that far.
