1911 9mm question

O

Those are interesting ( although dated)quotes from well respected authorities( some deceased)but it still doesn't really help out the op in deciding his first calibre for a 1911.i don't think the op is considering " lethality"in deciding what 1911 to first purchase
The 38 super is a good calibre, I've shot one since the early 90s,probably reloaded 50k or so over the years,so I think I know it reasonably well.I still consider it to be a poor choice for someone's first 1911.
Your cost analysis of 9mm vs 38super is well taken but fails to mention that there is no cheap bulk around for super for non reloaders, the super uses about twice the amount of powder than the 9 to reach its potential( yes you can load it down with tight group to shoot economically, but then you may as well shoot a 9),the cost of new brass is about the same, but you can pick up 9 mil brass for free on the range in bucket loads,I must have about 5k that I've picked up over the years, I don't think I've ever paid a cent for 9 mil brass,38 super brass, not so much, not much of that gets left lying around.

I agree, and think my original post #17 stated what your saying. Have a 9mm in a CZ75B and have no complaints with the caliber. 38 Super should only be considered if the op is a reloader, May not have made that clear in my short original post. I think every one should look at all options when looking at 1911's, brand and caliber.
As to post from another member stating that no such info existed , plus several of his statements as to chamber headspace are incorrect. I picked the first references that came to mind to show correct info. Handloader magazine had an excellent article in I believe the April 2015 edition on the 38 Super, that also supports these other sources, dated or not .

Thanks. I don't reload yet so that's not really an option but an idea for later down the road. I think I'm going to stick with the 9mm Sam 1911. Cheep to buy and feed and some decent reviews.

I was looking at the Sam in wolverine's site and its $520 and the same 1911 in 45acp was...$410....I believe(around there) both were plain Jane GIs

The .45s are "new old stock", and at 2014 prices. The 9mms all sold out and the new ones are are 2015 prices...

The SAM are quite nice for the money, and well worth a look. I don't have a 9mm, but my .45 Thunderbolt is gorgeous!

I just picked up a practically new SAM 9mm, fully disassembled it and lubed and i must say VERY impressed with the smooth action and overall quality of the gun. Havent had a chance to take it out the the range yet but functions exceptionally well with snap caps.

I had a 9mm norc 1911, ran flawlessly for a couple hundred rounds, then I sold it.
The experience was positive enough that I want another one in 9mm(maybe a SAM this time), even though the issue of a range not being close is still there.
