Well I have had a fair share of guns though I am a relatively new handgun shooter, various revolvers, pistols, semi autos, etc....
BUT - I always find myself heading back to the old reliable 1911, as a matter of fact I am culling out everything I own to go strictly 1911.

Maybe I am just a hundred years behind, but the 1911 has got to be IMO, the most comfortable, reliable, best looking, easiest to work on, most easily modifiable handgun in existance.

I can see now why so many like the 1911.

I am not wanting to create a thread war over which handgun design is best, I am merely wanting to state my opinion and how I have really come to appreciate the 1911 design. When I started shooting handguns I thought I wanted a little of everything, so thats what I bought - a good mix of revolvers, SA and SA/DA, various semi autos etc...but in the end I have found my end all be all of guns........1911's in every caliber.:D

I can say that I am really addicted to this design/gun.

I just thought I would share this and anyone that feels the same please post.

That's good because everyone knows Glock would win (every category except looks). ;)

Seriously though, 1911's will be made forever because they have an almost universal appeal. What's not to like?
 
I would agree. I have owned and sold various guns but the 1911 seems to fulfill several key needs and a few unique to a Canadian gun owner.

1. Single Action trigger. Sure some people are skilled with DA and DAO but the SA trigger is ideal for accuracy.
2. Hand fit. The slab sided grip 'locks' into one's hand with little torquing. For example the rounder grip of a BHP tends to torque laterally in my grip. The slim gripped 1911 like the sti fit even better in this regard. Hand fit can wring out accuracy like nothing else. (I shot better with a stock P99 than a custom BHP for this very reason)
3. Single stack mag. Why bother with fat mags in Canada? 8 rounds of .45 or 9 rounds of 9mm in a slim compact mag is the way to go in my opinion.
4.Ergonomic safety. down to fire as you tighten grip. Easy.
5. Reliable ... if not too tight.
6. Ease of detail stripping. Great for deep cleaning and replacing parts.
7. Availability of parts. Vital for us as shipping gun to US for repair is a PITA.
8. Lots of calibers. .45acp for power or nine for controllability and cheap practice (9mm is my favorite round).
9. In a commander length the 1911 is relatively compact. If you go with an officer's frame/commander slide, you get in my opinion one of the best carry pieces around (sure P7 is smaller but those are complex little guns). The 1911 is very slim compared to the chubby modern guns. BHP and p7 are skinnier in the slide however.
10. tough...especially if you shoot 9mm in a steel gun designed for .45. Lasts a long time.
11. Lots of choices in various price ranges.

Some things are not ideal.
1. releasing mag typically requires shifting grip (Cooper flip....I heard it called once.)
2. Slide stop also not easy to hit without shifting grip...I hit it with left thumb as I grip the gun with both hands.
3. Go to a unskilled smith or buy from a company with poor quality control and they are not reliable.
4. heavy. however alloy frames are available. I wish someone would do a lightweight commander in 9mm.
5. A little bit harder to clean compared to modern guns like Glock or Walther...not by much though.

What you are doing (heading back to the 1911 platform) is what I am finding my self doing. As much as I love my BHP and my P226R SIG, I love the 1911's to shoot , tweak and compete with.

My wife loves her IMBEL since I can make it as fast gripped or skinny gripped by swapping the panels. She likes how the 1911 settles in her small hand. She enjoys how there is a distinct reduction in recoil with all that metal round the 9mm barrel. Remember that Kanada, CCW is a moot point. All of our HG's are range queens.

I like how I can bead blast the entire pistol in 20 minutes and then re-parkerize after a nice muriatic acid bath. I no longer have to worry about holster wear or scratches to my finish knowing that I can carry out my own re-finishing.

Also I love the service by Gunnar (7 x 61 on CGNutz) at www.armco.com , He is a first class 'smith for the 1911. He has bailed out my tail feathers on 2 occasions. Now I just send him any 1911 projects and I am at peace. He just replaced the Norinco factory sights (accurate, but VERY small) with some 3 dot higher vis sights and now this NP29 is TRULY dead nuts on the bullseye.

So I'm pleased that there is a wealth of 1911 talent out there.

Now with 2 9mm 1911's (my wife's IMBEL 9mm and my NP29) and a Norc .45 frame with Wilson Combat (read: Ceiner) .22LR kit.... we have lots of handgun fun in our family.

I still miss my P226R and BHP.....
 
One of the big charms of 1911 is: you can always do something to it, e.g. swapping parts, installing new gadgets, re-finishing, or even just a new grip. And men like to improve their toys.

Polymer guns do not allow you to do anything: it is a whole piece of plastic. Shoot, clean, back in the box. I think that is much less fun.
 
If I had the money for it I'd probably be buying a new 1911 every month...

Safe to say Im addicted to the design... and there are so many different variations out there from different manufacturers that the bank just can't keep up.

I agree, and personalizing a 1911 is an easy thing to do as there are many aftermarket pieces manufactured for this design, and as you said the choice of finishes we can put on these are endless....

BuddyHollyDied, I was about to pounce on you and suggest that you were a fake, a fraud, or even worse, a reincarnation of "NAA",:eek:
But
HE revealed himself and would have only mentioned "Colt" in his post. I dont know if he is aware that there are other companies that build a 1911 style firearm, at least he will never say their names.

My Delta Elite is one of my favorites. I like the way it fits in my hand, feel and function.
