I own two S.A. M1911-A1's (Loaded & Mil-Spec) and have upgraded the recoil springs, firing pin spring, and soon to be extractors. I bought the WilsonCombat BulletProof extractor....many have said its the best.

Has anyone bought/replaced their factory extractors and installed aftermarket ones? Nowlen, WilsonCombat, Ed Brown, and Brownells all make aftermarket extractors....which ones are the best?

A poor extractor is one of the leading problems to jams in the 1911, so I'm replacing my Mil-Spec factory extractor for the WilsonCombat BulletProof extractor. My Loaded model had a couple stovepipes in which the spent casing failed to eject cause the jam (Extractor wasn't cleaned regularly) but after I gave more attention to that area the problem stopped....never one jam after that and thousands of rounds fired.

My concern is that the G.I.45 & Mil-Spec are lower down the latter than the Loaded / Operator / models so I'm concerned about reliabilty...one jam is one jam too many.

Any thoughts experiences with this topic?

Thanks

Did you replace the exractor because you were having extraction problems or you were worried you would have extraction problems?

AFTEC are the best, they cost allot ($99+) but worth it. You can order from Sean @ Freedom Ventures.

dont get to caught up in brand names.I have found that tuning an existing one(colt,sa,norc)will do the trick. If you put a slight bend in at at the mid point say 5 deg.Use a vise. This bend will help it maintain tension on the rim of the brass .

did you guys have problems, are was getting an Aftec preventative maintenance?

I was having some issues with reliable extraction, and the AFTEC cured it. Once you have it installed, your brass will hit the ground in one neat little pile.

I had problems with Ben's gun,if you notice he has been smiling at the matches since the spring bang, when Sean put the Aftec in.If it works you're ok if you are having problems go Aftec

This isn't a "Brand Name" issue, its a quality issue. The problem with putting a slight bend to tweak the stock unit is that after awhile you will need to bend it again. All this bening back and forth causes the steel to work harden, become brittle and snap. Aftec doesn't work that way, the pressure on the case is achieved by springs loacted where the "bend" should start on a turn of the century extractor and by pivoting on the firing pin stop. I realise the price tag puts people off buying one but if you consider the long term cost of buying multiple Wilson, Ed Brown or other regular units, you are saving money buy getting an AFTEC and saving the time it wuold take you to tune a new extractor with every replacement. In auto racing there is a saying that what wins on Sunday sells on Monday, the same can be said about firearms. When it comes to hand guns IPSC/USPSA is the ultimate proving ground for platforms and components. Ask all the top Standard and Open shooters what extractor they use and you will get AFTEC as your anwser far more than Browning's design.
