I'm looking at Kimber's website and the thumb safety is only on one side on some models. How exactly do you operate the thumb safety and could a left handed shooter easily use a 1911 with the thumb safety mounted only on one side (for right handed use)?

You can get after market ambi safeties for darn near all 1911 pistols. The Kimbers safies are held in differently than most by use of a slot in the sear pin. Have you checked out Dlask? He is a Canadian manfacture of good quality left and right handed 1911s

Another lefty here,I just started using a 1911,less then 500rds to date,and yeah you can work the safety with your left thumb,with a little practice.But it changes your sight picture when you do,I guess you could,"WITH YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER",take the safety off as you start you draw.
Your probable better to get a ambi-safety,got one on my CZ-75 works great.

way back in the day, ( i'm a PURE lefty- left handed, left eye dominant) i learned to operate the 1911 in the left hand , you use the trigger finger for everything, but you get minimal purchase on the safety and it goes easier on than off- it's the bottom joint of the trigger finger of the left hand that does it instead of the right thumb- when i got my own personal, i had the wilson combat ambi installed and it snicks on/off with the left thumb- the rest of the controls can be manipulated using the trigger finger- the only TRUE mirror image 1911 i ever saw was a RANDALL, but then all your mags and doo-dads don't fit cause the slots are on the wrong side

All Glocks are left-handed.
The genius, John Browning was probably not left handed. His superior 1911 design easily adapts to us lefties though. The BHP will also adapt.
The good people at Glock and Beretta make their fine products to suit us. Sig is a holdout except for their very nice SAO versions.
Installing a left hand safety can be difficult. Some versions of the L/safety work better than others so be careful about which one you choose,and don't be cheap.

Another lefty here. Been shooting 1911's for going on 30 years. Never worried to much about anything being "ambi" but an ambi safety is nice, though. I can deal with the rest of it.
