Was looking at the Colt Gold Cup as I want a high end 1911....The contenders are the Kimber Custom target and the SIG TAC OPS. I'd like to own a Colt but is it all name?
How does the Colt compare to the other higher end 1911's

My limited experience with a Colt 1911 Commander is it was a little picky on ammo, ran best with colt mags and required a break-in period.
My gen4 G21 on the other hand functioned without any issues right out of the box and ate whatever the Colt didn't like….ditto with my Sig 1911 Blackwater.

there are colt lovers and other not so impressed. The main considerations for me would be price range and intended use. I think you probably get more gun for your money with the other two options you list.

Hi, here's my .02 cents worth. I don't own a Colt Gold Cup but I do own a Colt Gov. Series 7. I've owned it for about 30 years. I love it and it shoots great. I've heard some bad stuff about the Kimber. I would consider a Tauris over a Kimber. If you have lots of money, Wilson is one of the best if not the best. You can get a basic Colt reasonably cheap and add to it later on. Or another good pistol is Ruger, have only heard good things about it. Springfield and Remington 45's are good from what I have heard. I know that a lot of .45's need to be broken in, but once broken in are great. Colts are built to very high standards, I don't think you can go wrong with one.

Question: What are you going to use the 1911 for, Bullseye, IPSC, etc?

For general target shooting, the Colt Gold Cup Trophy model with the Elliason rear sights is a fine firearm. If on the other hand you are going to shoot action pistol, then make sure you get the Gold Cup Trophy model with the dovetail Bomar type sights. I have and use both types, a blue model for Bullseye and a stainless model for IPSC. The Gold Cup Trophy model is comparable to several reputable manufacturers target models, eg Kimber, Springfield, etc. In general, price may be the determining factor.

From what I have seen over the years, Colts are a bit higher priced, but with all of the fitting and national match parts they use I can understand. The trigger from the factory is very good, I prefer the wider trigger shoe. They are reliable and generally feed most types of ammunition, lead semi-wadcutters (typically 200 grain) are generally regarded as the test for feed problems. With the national match barrels (with wider ramps) the Gold Cup trophy models feed well. I have tried many types of ammo in my stainless IPSC gun and had no problems ever. I use a 14 pound Wolff recoil spring for Bullseye (200 SWC at 750 fps) and an 18 1/2 pound Wolff recoil spring for IPSC (200 SWC at 900 fps or factory hardball).

If you are looking for a "better" 1911, then Les Bear, Wilson, Ed Brown, Nighthawk, are all very good. For higher end IPSC (if using the 45ACP), the STI and Infinity manufacturers are considered excellent. But, all are priced higher.

Just my two cents .....

Kimber and Sig 1911 get mixed reviews. Reliability is hit and miss with those guns. Colts are generally reliable but fit and finish can be disappointing for a gun in that price range. There are better choices out there (i.e. STI). Go to 1911forum.com and do some research. It's a great resource.
