Which (in your educated opinion... based on personal experience) would be the preferred 1911 in 45acp???
Colt Gold Cup?
Kimber Custom II target??
Rock Island?
Any others.??
Criteria is adjustable sights and legal for IDPA.
I have a serious allergy to poor quality equipment, but don't want to spend tons of $.
My preference is to buy North American products

Also ... anyone have any experience with the Kimber .22lr conversion kits???
Thx

What are you thoughts on the Taurus PT 1911? I hear they have a great trigger, have a extended ambi thumb safety, and have a great price tag for all of the extra's you get with it.

I have the Kimber .22 conversion kit for my Stainless Kimber TLE II. I have been pleased with it. As per the owner's manual, you will need to use high velocity ammunition in order to make the slide cycle reliably.

the colt gold cup had/has issues with the rear sight ( elliason) screw coming out and getting lost- that's why the gov't was preferred- but that was way back when- most of us just replaced the entire set of sights on the colt anyway

I've enjoyed mine as well.

I had an STI Trojan for a short while, overall my Kimber was a nicer gun, though the STI had a nicer trigger. I also couldn't stand the STIppling on the STI's front strap.

I think all of your picks are good ones. Don't be too surprised if you have to spend a few $$$ upgrading any new pistol no matter how much you pay for a production gun. Custom jobs should run well but again, don't be too surprised if you have to get a trigger done and spend some time on the range breaking it in.

As much as I love the deep blue of the Colts, the Kimber's probably had the best slide to frame fit I've seen on a factory gun if that's important to you. I've got a Springfield that's a bit looser but still is a great shooter.

Have fun picking out your favourite

Well, I'm a handgunning and 1911 noob so my advice is worth what you're paying for it :p

I decided to go with the Rock island .45 from ArmsEast (see sponsors at the top of the page, the service was top notch) as it was reasonable cost wise and from everything I could gather, is a solid pistol and a decent shooter.

I've just had my first chance to shoot it yesterday and it feels (and looks) waaaayyy better than my friend's Norc. I'm not a good shot with a pistol yet but fwiw I was far more accurate with the RIA .45 than my M&P in 9mm. Now, it's not domestic but it's not ChiCom either if that's an issue for you.

So if you're like me and don't want to spend a fortune to see if the 1911 is for you then the Rock Island might be the way to go.

I also went with Rock Island .45, and I think ya got your self a fine pistol. After shooting it, I'm very pleased.
I'd stay away from the adjustable sights, its just something else to break.
