1911 colt brand, how good are they?

I had one. I have always found my Kimber Gold Match II to be a better gun both outside and inside. The Kimber was finished off nicer, better polishing, smoother surfaces on the inside while cleaning, a couple other little details. It was also more accurate.

I was looking at a Commander 1911 and came across a Colt Stainless XSE, the Dan Wesson is much nicer, more refined.

do most people tend to shoot the standard length model better? i like the look of the bobtail wesson, and have heard it points very nicely as well.

i just went through all the 1911 research and I looked at Colt closely. I picked the DW CBOB, it's fantastic !!

Colts come in a variety of models, from the high end custom jobs to the more moderately priced XSE. Comparing a $1100 XSE to a $2000+ Dan Wesson is a little unfair.

My Colt Special Combat Government compares well to any gun I've seen in the $2,000 range and it gets a lot of compliments. Its very accurate and is reliable.

I think pretty much any new 1911 over $1000 is going to be a pretty good gun, no matter who makes it. Colts are "special" though, you buy a Colt because you want a "Colt". People love to dump on Colt and always will, no matter how good the new models are.

What Dan Wesson models sell for $2000+ ? The CBOB was $1400
I fell into the trap of believing the fellow at the range who had a Dan Wesson...not sure what model. If they are comparably priced then Ok :)

My point still stands though which is that if someone likes the idea of buying a Colt...buy a Colt...if you don't give a darn about the cult of the Colt, buy whatever you can get the best deal on!

The magic of the 1911 is in the design rather than a specific manufacturer. The closer a manufacturer stays to the original design, with minor modifications, the more reliable the gun is. The Colt Series 70 is a good example of this. Colt decided they could improve accuracy with the addition of the barrel bushing that had spring steel fingers that kept tension on the barrel. Most 1911 enthusiasts by now consider this "improvement" a mistake, but one that is easily reconciled. The list of true improvements to the 1911 is pretty short, but the cottage industry built around 1911 add-on's has certainly flourished.

My sig line used to say "Colt 1911, best damn government in the world". Must've been for a reason........ ;)

Colt used to define the 1911. Not so much anymore. I still prefer a pre Series 70 Colt over any other 1911. But going modern there are lots of great choices out there.
