got a chance to buy some of these from an estate. there is 20-30 of each brand. mostly older looking. my problem is i dont know what to look for. any quick help would be very valuble as i am not the only one looking. the estate does not want to do on line selling. anyone have some advice on what to look for.

With the Colt's you want to look at the year of manufacture. The serial number tells you that, google is your friend. Older is better for collecables, as is the military ones, and they will have "United States Property" on them. Mine was Lend Lease to the British Army and have the British proof marks on it. Look for typical wear, barrel, slide rails, finish. Remember, most Colt 1911's aren't the tightest fitting, so not to worry if they are a bit loose. Check for pitting inside and out, would indicate improper storage. Check the grip panels to see if they are original to the pistol and the mags as well, not a big deal to most, but collectors prefer everything original. Check the sights to see if they are original as well. Can't help you with the S&W's.
