So what is involved in swapping a Commander length slide onto a Government frame?

If I recall the link is different. I was chewing on putting a Norinco Commander slide onto one of their double stacked Government length versions.

The forward dust cover of a full length 1911 frame is approximately 3/4" longer than the same on a commander frame. You will find that it will protrude into the relief cut into the slide. While it will unlikely impede function it will look very unsightly..... ;)

What about the reverse ? Can I install a 5 inch slide on a Commander frame ?

I'm expecting a Para LTC and an STI Trojan and am wondering how far are these exchangeables...

Yes, likely but you will have an approximate 3/4" gap between the forward dustcover on your commander frame and the lower rear edge of your slide. Also as unsightly as the above.

It also may be possible for the recoil spring to get caught up in this gap if you are not using a full lenght guide rod.

Your Para and your STI barrels will have different ramps, and each frame will have a corresponding cut, so the barrel will have to stay with the frame.

And the Para and STI slide will be fit fairly closely to the frame, so while it may fit onto the other frame, it also might or might not fit the other without metal removal (that you don't want to do).
