I am going to purchase a 1911 .45 sometime soon. Still not sure if I want a full length or a shorty. Just want to here the pro's and cons from the experienced guys. Accuracy? Control? etc.

You should have both. If you only get one, you will be always wondering what the other is like.

I suggest you start with the 5" Government. It is heavier, easier to shoot, and not as loud. It should be slightly more accurate, too.

If your looking for a cmmander you should check out the STI Ranger II in 45.I just bought one in 9mm and love it.Might think of getting the 45 too.

I have both, however I shoot the government the most cause it's done up with a beaver tail etc. The commander will soon be too.

Commander for me. I've had both, and I prefer the commander. It just looks more proportioned, and if you get one with enough weight in it the recoil is nothing alarming. I have a Dan Wesson Classic Bobtail and have also fired the STI Ranger II, both feel great in the hand and shoot even better. Recoil and noise aren't an issue, IMO.

I just like the slightly smaller package of the commander. I think it looks better, too.

My 2 Cents...

Thought this would be a worthwhile contribution for my 6,000 post on CGN...

While I currently have only one Commander 1911... a Colt Combat Commander in 9mm... Over the years I have owed many, many different 1911's, mostly full size models..... and they are my preference... so, my vote went for the full size 'Government' models...

I think the Commander is better balanced for an all around gun, but the full length Government is a better choice for target shooting because the extra length (forward weight) allows the muzzle to "hang" better.

PS either one is better shooting than 90% of the guns currently on the market, so you can't go wrong.

The Commander looks and feels right, the Gov is to long for my tastes
As per Colin, that is my personal outlook also. The all steel Combat Commander just seems to have that handling edge over the full length Gov. model. You can not do wrong in choosing either.

If you are going to carry the 1911 opt for a LTW Commander, if it is just for home/range the Government is a better choice. Regards, Richard:D
