1911 Disassembly

Hi there,

I am completely new to the world of handguns, as far as owning them anyway. I need some help with the first step of disassembling my 1911. I know usually you just push on the plug and twist the barrel bushing but that is not the case on mine. It has an upgraded single port comp barrel and there doesn't appear to be a barrel bushing :confused: Here is what you're looking at:

I am taking it apart is because I took it to the range for the first time today and every time I fired a round the slide got stuck in the cocked back position and it was difficult to push it forward. Input would be appreciated :D

Cant tell from the photo, but is the compensator an add-on to the barrel:confused: ? If so, the compensator will act as the bushing and rotate in order to allow removal.. Sorry, but I can't see well enough how it is attached. If it has a steel guide rod it will also have an Allen bolt at the front where the plug sits and that would have to be removed as well. Funny how u received no documentation re stripping etc unless it was used. As for a diagram of the parts and disassembly procedure, you can visit the Marstar site, clic on pistols on the left side, then click on reference library on left side again. Very helpful info if u are new.

On some of the compensated guns, I believe you remove the whole top end as one complete unit, then take the recoil spring and guide rod out the back , they have a recoil spring plug that is pushed in from the back also. When the recoil spring and recoil spring plug and guide rod are removed , the barrel link can be folded down and the barrel with compensater can be removed out the front of the slide. There are a few different setups or combinations of parts, yours may come apart differently. GOOD LUCK.
 
Okay, thanks for the quick replies guys..but I'm still not able to disassemble it. The compensator doesn't seem to turn when the plug is depressed so I don't believe that it is supposed to twist. I have added links to some more detailed pictures so hopefully somebody can figure it out. And yeah I didn't get any take down instructions because it was purchased used. Will PM the GunNut I got it from and see what he can tell me about it.

Huh? Easiest gun to field strip...ever!

You should be able to remove the slide, barrel, recoil spring and guide as an assembly. Just pull back the slide to the takedown notch and pull out the slide lock.
 
This thread boggles the mind... a 1911 will detail strip using a few very basiv tools. I think I could strip mine using one paperclip and one screwdriver if needed.

Drop the magazine, then #### the pistol.
There are two notches on the bottom of the left side of the slide: pull the slide back until the smaller round notch is lined up with the part of the slide release that goes inside the slide.
Holding the slide in that position, push the slide release lever's shaft from the right side of the pistol towards the left.
Once the rear end of the slide release clears the slide, pill the slide release completely from the pistol.
Pull the slide forward off the frame.
From there you should be able to remove the spring guide, recoil spring, etc, then pull the barrel, comp and all, forward out of the slide

Actually a 1911 can be detail stripped with no tools! A tang on the sear spring can be used to free the mag release and the hammer strut can be used to push out the mainspring housing pin...tada, no tools!:D

Ah, yes...the grip screws could be removed with the sear spring...the ejector pin removal, I would consider to be overkill for a detail strip (unless it is broken). Anyway, the point was that this gun is easy to strip. After all it was designed almost a hundred years ago for soldiers in the field, so it had to be simple (in case your IQ was 25:p ).
 
Thanks for all the help guys turns out that the slide lock had to be removed (just like agit_prop said) and the slide just came right off and it looks like I have fixed the problem :).
