so today i managed to handle a Para double-stack and boy did it feel nice in my large hands! seems the double-stack makes the grip a lot fatter, which is great for me cuz single-stacks make my hand cramp in a hurry.

which route is better in 1911-land: a double-stack, or finding really big fat grips for a single-stack. are there grips that can make a s.s. as wide and fat as a d.s.?

I have a set of steel inserts that go between the grips & the frame on a 1911.
The end result is a single stack that is about the same width as a double stack. It also adds weight as they are made from steel which absorbs recoil.
I have large hands.

But I stopped using them as I prefer the feel of a double stack. Except when I have to buy mags . Then a single stack comes out ahead.

I can only say , in my opinion, try both & see which feels better.

hmm, interesting idea! one of my buddies does a fair bit of machining so a set of spacers made from either steel or aluminum ought to be easy. never even thought of that.

so, what else on a double-stack feels different? does the recoil go down quite a bit? is the slide fatter too? the Para i saw today was only hand-held briefly and i didn't shoot it.

Mine came with extra long grip screws as they have to go through both the grip & the insert.
Slide & top end parts are the same for both a single stack & a double.

One good thing about the inserts is that if you change your mind or sell the gun you can take them out.

Yes, the recoil feels less. It is actually the same but spread over a bigger area.
