I think only the weight increase reduces the recoil.
To actually reduce recoil, the barrel needs to be ported as there has to be a gas seal behind the bullet. As the bullet passes the ports, gas is released upwards right before the bullet exits, therefore pushing the gun down and naturally not as much gas exits from the front
In these drop in compensators, there is no gas seal, all gasses exit out the front of barrel, there just happens to be a port at the front and top
