I'm in the market for one and looking for opinions and experiences for someone with small hands.

I've been reading a lot about everyone’s opinion of the various 1911's on the market. Great stuff out there but without the opportunity to try the various ones out there is there anyone who also has this issue and can make some recommendations.

Thanks in advance for the help.

1911's are good choices for those with small hands. The grip can be somewhat adjusted by using flat or curved mainspring housings and short or long triggers.
The downside is that I always seem to be adjusting my grip for every shot.
Browning Hi-Power's are good too because of the single action trigger and a user friendly grip design.
I'm told the new Berettas have a shorter trigger reach.

Try out as many guns as you can, if you are on a budget, and have your heart set on a 1911, then I might suggest a Norinco 1911 Commander from Armco, it should be less than $600 delivered to your door and tuned up by him. Check his ad in the banner.

I'm in the market for one too. I'm not too familiar with 1911 and I do have
small hands. I've been trying some different ones and the one with double
stack definitely is a no go. I held one but not sure what makes, it has
D.A.R.K on the side receiver, the grip is so big and then I tried a Colt1911 ....
wow.... so nice in the hand. I'm almost definitely sure that's the one to get.

I have small hands, and shoot A LOT of different handguns. The best choice for small hands in my opinion is a SAA revolver, next would be a D frame Colt DA revolver. After that I would place the 1911, with flat mainspring housing and short trigger. Really depends on how small is small, though. I started my kids with a 22 SAA when they were preschool age, worked out fine. - dan

Thanks everyone,,,Dan, I have a SW686 with a small Hogue grips and it fits nicely in my hand and I definitely shoot the best with it. Im looking for something to hopefully try my hand at IDPA or IPSC, Currenty have a CZ85 but find the double stack a little fat. Thought a single stack 1911(plus 1911 look so good). There is a good article about the STI 1911 and the Slim Grip
w3.stiguns.com/USPress/complete-handguns/bookofhandguns.html. Just wish I had the funds to buy something like that or a colt, Browning or one of each to try and then move on if I found it not to my liking. LOL

p.s looking for a 9mm.

As was said, try as many guns as you can. I have smaller hands and cannot shoot most double stacks and revolvers with with those huge wooden grips very good. Colt 1911s were made for me. I thought for a long time I just am no good till A fellow member let me try his gold cup. Surprised everyone. Good luck

A 1911, or any single stack pistol for that matter, is great for people with smaller hands. A lot of manufactures are making firearms with interchangeable grip inserts. They would also be a good choice.

I have held a Norinco 1911 in my small girlie hands, and it was an 'ok' fit but it was not ideal. Couldn't reach the slide release etc. I'm looking forward to trying the BHP, I have heard they are more appropriate for us small hand types :D

STI makes their Trojan and Ranger II with slim grips as standard. You may also want to replace a long trigger with a short trigger...like the ones on old 1911A1 or on most Norinco's. That should reduce trigger reach for you.

The BHP does have a small grip but may not work for everyone. I found the grip is more 'square' compared to the long rectangle of the 1911 so the BHP tended to 'torque' in my hand whereas the 1911 resisted lateral torque.

If you order an STI check out the Freedom Ventures site, they sell lots of STI parts and the short trigger is available. I recently ordered one from Phoenix Range in Edmonton and you can order the STI trojan or Ranger II with some choice in parts...like heinie straight eight night sights, trigger length, thickness of grip

My wife has small hands and she absolutely loves her Imbel M1911 9mm. I set it up for her with a pair of Pearce Thin Grips, just rubber slabs. She likes the long match trigger on there. I also dropped in a flat mainspring housing.

Here's the ONLY downside: She won't give it back. So I just had to go out and buy myself a Norinco-Plinko NP29.

Cheers,
Barney

1911 with thin grips and extended slide release and safety would probably suit you better. Even the thin Navidrex grips on the BHP don't make it as small as the Gov't model. Less "2 x 4 feel" though. - dan

Well for what it's worth, i've been told the Wilson Combat kz-45 is great for people with small hands. It's thinner than a normal single stack, 1911, but holds 10 rounds. It's a polymer frame with a steel slide 1911.
