1911 for Under $1000

I'm looking to buy my first handgun, and have my mind set on the 1911.

what brand will I get the most for my money? 45.ACP or 9mm

If you dont reload no brainer 9mm, even if you reload you'll shoot a lot more on a same budget with a 9mm.

If the OP wants to spend a little more (and maybe get better quality) he could look at the Armscor-made 1911's.

Reviews in gun magazines are generally very positive.

Sti for under a grand do come up....45 Spartan is a very fine shooting pistol for 750$....might find a Trojan..

I went with an O'Dell Engineering Canuck 9mm 1911 Stainless. I got it for $650 at Target Sports (it was a Boxing Day sale price). 9mm not only shoots soft in the 1911, but it's a lot cheaper so you can shoot more ($269/1K vs $269/500 or twice as much). Extra Brownell magazines were around $25.

It's great value for the money.

The smoothest shootin' 1911 for under $1K I have owned/shot was a Remmy R1. I have had Norc's, Ruger and Remington in that price range (as well as a few used Colts), and the Remington was smoother than most and just as tight as any. (That kinda sounded creepy ....).

2 or 3 years ago I would have said Ruger or Kimber. Stoopid Canadian dollar. Don't know about the sub-$1000 pistols now.

For your other question, for me all 1911 should be .45acp, end of story.

Go for a Norinco. Canada Ammo has them cheap on sale, as well as several supporting vendors. They are not the best finish and not as accurate and refined as many more expensive guns, but, they go bang and are a very cheap way to get into pistols.

Exactly. But I really like the Ruger so might be inclined to buy it before the R1.

Picked up a local, lightly used SR1911 last year for way under a grand - you see good deals for them on EE from time to time too. It's never failed with anything I've fed it, from factory to various handloads. Very happy with the pistol. used it in IDPA a bit, and just all round enjoy shooting it.

I can't speak highly enough of my Remington R1 enhanced, which I got from Wolverine Supplies. Once I put a few rounds in it and learnt to keep it well lubed, it has performs flawlessly

I've upgraded some parts, but to be honest out the box it was good enough that it didn't need anything done. Even the trigger was smooth and crisp.
