Hey guys, I've got a new Kimber Custom II .45 thats having a bit of a hard time feeding rounds. Out of about 100 that I've shot so far, I've had at least 6 or 7 failures to feed, maybe more.

Im using Chip McCormick 8rnd mags. They were just cheapies from a local shop, I don't know if these are any good?

Anyways, its happened about 3 times on the very first round in the mag. When I hit the slide release, the slide stops about 1/2" before its normal full-forward position. The round is in the chamber, still pointed upwards and not quite fully positioned into the barrel. I've been shooting Winchester flat nose FMJ ammo. I've been able to rack the slide back manually and the next round always feeds fine. Today I fired off a few mags quickly and got another FTF towards the end.

How do I troubleshoot this? Should I try some different mags and maybe different ammo? Can it be the mags causing it, considering that the round is kind of half way to where its supposed to be? I imagine it wouldn't have much to do with the feed ramp or the mags since the rounds are making it half way up.... but I don't know much so its best to ask.

Thanks

Polish the ramp a little bit.:D

If that doesn't work, try some round-noses.

I've had nothing but good luck with Chip McC mags.

I've been doing some reading and others have experience similar problems. One guy mentioned that his gun simply didn't like the Chip Shooting Star mags and that it was fine after he went to Wilson Combat... another guy also mentioned that he had no issues with round nose ammo, only flat tops.

I'll try that before doing any modifications or possibly sending the thing back to Kimber.

definitely try different mags.

I think the CMC's feed lips are narrow, longer, if you get my meaning... the cartridge is still pointing down when it is finally released by the lips which then causes the round to get stuck at the feed ramp. I noticed that Wilson Combat mags get wider a little earlier (we are talking .5mm if that) and I've never had a problem with Wilson mags and feeding in the Kimber.

I know what you are talking about as I also had what you had a few times with CMC mags. Good luck!

You didn't say if you are using FACTORY or HANDLOADED AMMUNITION . If you are using HANDLOADS ,try FACTORY round nose bullets before you do anything to your gun, then if that doesn't change things , try FACTORY round nose bullets in the magazine that came with your gun ( the cheapies may have something wrong with them , although I use Chip McCormick 8 and 10 rounders with no problems what so ever), and if that doesn't work , take it back to the dealer. You have about $1000 invested in a new gun which should work with factory round nose bullets. If it works with factory ammunition and not with handloads , your overall cartridge length might not be right for the bullet shape( too long or too short).

Sounds like there's too much tension on the extractor to allow the bullet to slip underneath on the feed or a mag problem.

Kimbers in Canada are generally sold by some reputable, customer service-oriented dealers; have you told whoever you got it from that you're having the problem? I'm sure they'd be happy to help.
