I'm looking at the Canadian contract 1911 and other GI offerings as well in the exchange section. I was wondering if there were any Canadian sources of true GI (or Colt Commercial) parts. (preferably a supporting member of course).

Well, 28 people looked at the query, and no answers, so that is probably an answer in itself. :)

I did commit to buy the 102 year old pistol, and I'd like to shoot it from time to time. This thread is because I'd like to maintain it with appropriate parts. A Norinco barrel will fit but is somehow, just not right.

I'm guessing there aren't a whole lot of original equipment parts sitting around in bags of cosmolene. Sooner or later, it's going to need springs and such. It would be nice to have a spare slide stop....

Looking for opinions on how you would maintain this without disrespecting it - and lets broaden the sourcing question from supporting members (still preferred) to planet earth.

TIA

To answer your question is very difficult
You are looking for parts that are unique, that are made by Colt and for very small batch of pistols that our country adopted almost 100years ago. And not really used ever since. Your best bet would be to post WTB add in the EE and probably buy a parts gun. Otherwise you have to go and browse gun shows around the country to find unicorns.
Look at it this way even common as dirt Tokarev parts that are proper for particular specimen are hard to find. Canadian contract 1911 oh boy it may be years to locate stuff.
Goodluck.

Thanks GEWEHR76

It's certainly not a safe queen - or even really a collector. It's just an old soldier that doesn't want to be disrespected. I guess the topic of the thread was even wrong. These are commercial - not Gov't. I'll certainly keep my eyes open for original parts or a parts gun. In the mean time, I don't imagine it would object parts that are at least period correct. (I have so much to learn). Thanks for the input.

If you're looking for the look and feel of an original 1911 but want to shoot it, I'd suggest a repro Colt. I'm too cheap for that though, so I made my own. Its just an S70 I picked up on the ee with some period parts on it. Not 100% accurate but for beating up at the range its fine.

I have an old Gov't Model from 1914 but I don't shoot it, this was my way of recreating one that I felt comfortable shooting. If you're nitpicky about the little details, no its not correct. Serrated mag release, later style serrated slide stop... the ee may bring results for those small parts if you need them. I have an early style slide stop in the parts bin but its been chromed or nickel plated. As for original correct barrels, you're probably going to pay big if you find one for sale. Good luck with it though, I understand the desire for an original style 1911.

:d Thanks for sharing that. It is indeed a cool piece and I'm guessing it raises a few eyebrows at your range. Would love something like that, but it just isn't in the budget now after ordering the 1914 - 1911.

I expect mine will come out to a range night a couple times a year - passed around for a pistol fondling and a few mags of reduced loads and then it'll be back to the STI for serious beating around on the range.
