1911 - Government or Commander?

So I'm picking up my first 1911 this week and I'm hung up on the full length Government or the more compact Commander. I really like the look and proportions of the Commander a lot more, but considering it'll never be carried, I figure the Government will have a bit of an accuracy advantage.

What's your preference and why?

Need both...I have 2 Gov's and am currently looking for a set of Commanders. This is the only way I can be "sure" Ihave what I want.

Btw, what are you thinking of buying brand,sites,mod'ed ? Stock? etc...

Oddly enough I have always shot better with Commander length 1911's. I have no idea why.

But because nobody can seem to get this in for me, I may just order that Armco tuned Commander from Gunnar.

I don't want top of the line, because I'm gonna be putting a lot of rounds through it. I want one I can get dirty

The Commander just looks and feels better. It's just well balance, although the origanal sites sucked.

You want the government..you want the extra weight advantage..so when it jams you can pistol whip them with alot more force..

I have always bought the fullsize ones..Depends on your use I suppose..

Personally, I prefer full sized Government models both for looks & shooting, but have also owned a number of 'Commanders' over the years.

Pitdoggy is right, ya gotta have some of each, though... just to be sure...

I really want to get either a commander or officer's model, but that is in addition to the two 5" barreled 1911s I have. To have only one. I don't know.

Thought about it. If I could have only one it would be the government length.

have 2 gov'ts & just got a commander. The commander is a lot quicker to handle for IPSC & is perfect for CCW. for lots of rounds at a session the gov't length is less tiring. my accuracy is actually better with the commander but this may be conicidence

At present, all I have is a Springer Operator, but I'd like to get a nice commander size 1911. It made more sense to me to get the full size model first and to learn to shoot a .45 with a full length gun.

Well balanced nice shooting pistols. Plastic fantastic guns will never be the same to you after owning a 1911 .
