I'm curious to know if a goverment 5" barrel will fit a commander. Logically the barrel with extend beyond the end of the gun.

Is there a safety or accuracy reason why I wouldn't want to do this?

yes this will work although you may need a different sized barrel link.... you may not. I had a ported compensated commander that used a standard gov model barrel without a hitch.

with SOME barrels, you may have to remove some metal at the point where the barrel DIAM blends/expands into the chamber area.

Otherwise the barrel bushing may bottom out or seize on the barrel.

OTHER than that,
I have BTDT several times,
and usually ported the 3/4" hanging out the end

Twenty years ago, I acquired a Bar-Sto 5" barrel in .45ACP, which I fitted to a Colt Combat Commander.

I had intended to shorten the barrel. I left it sticking out.

It shot so well that I was afraid of disturbing something and losing that golden edge, and so left it.

I still have the gun, and it still makes me smile when I shoot it.

When I do my part, it will deliver 1" holes at twenty five yards.

I have also thought about porting the end, the fears mentioned above, have probably kept me from making a mistake by cutting into it.

2 cents.
