1911 Grip Safety - Why ??

Although some shooters (mostly "combat" competition folks) pin the 1911 grip safety so that it's inoperable, and others never engage manual safeties, it really is a risky practice.

The reason the grip safeties are pinned, is that a two handed "high" grip on the gun can often miss putting enough pressure on the middle or lower part of the grip safety to disengage it. Your strong hand is holding the gun near the pivot point of the grip safety.

The original JMB design didn't have a beavertail, so using the same type of high grip would literally cost you an ounce of flesh......

The grip safety on a 1911 serves no useful purpose and is commonly pinned by those who carry one for serious work. I fail to see how pinning the grip safety is any more dangerous than using a gun without one. The same thing goes for the magazine disconnect found on the Browning High Power.

my personal theory is that by having to make sure you are squeezing the grip with enough pressure to trip the grip safety,...

It takes like a fraction of a faction of an once of pressure to trip a 1911 grip safety...

'Not an issue...

All those I know who use a 1911 for "serious work" do NOT pin the grip safety. I have yet to lose flesh from a proper grip on my 1911A1 - the same can NOT be said of a couple of other pistol's I've used that don't have grip safeties at all.

IMHO if you are holding it that high without a beavertail then you are holding the gun in a manner it was not designed for and if you get "bit" under those circumstances it's your own fault, not the pistol's.

All you 1911 haters just need to cool out.chill brothers cause the 1911 cult will be here forever as long as one person shoots one !

JMB 's Lever ,Pump ,pistol ,full auto probably more than a hundred patends and not one of them a bad one!

The more safetys the better ,many a Highway Patrolman owes his life to the S&W Mod 39 where the Mag disconnect saved his life!

The 1911 and the 1911A are a usable pistol and enough for me!

I'm still waiting for Pelosie to put a safety on my 1917 S&W !

Be glad we can have anything now because I feel The South May Have To Rise Again! When they start taxing you for every firearm you own ,then the Government will be creating criminals again !

So enjoy what you have and yes the 1911 is the answer in 230 grain !

YMMV Bob
