1911 grip size... are Commander and Govt size the same size grips??

Total n00b to 1911's here... are the grip side panels different, between a Commander and the larger Govt size? And are the mounting holes same or different?
 
They are exactly the same.

Frame wise, the only difference between Government 5 inch and Commander 4.25 inch is the shorter dust cover on the Commander frame. As well, the slide and barrel are shorter and the recoil spring is also slightly heavier weight, IIRC.

Certain mafufacturers (like STI) use the exact same frame for commander and govt slides.
Had a pistol named ranger ll, i could fit a full 5'' slide on it no problems.

I take it you have acquired a Commander sized gun. I recently acquired a pair of Remington R1 Commanders, one blued, t'other stainless. Haven't shot a 5" 1911 since. Don't know why it took me so long to discover them. It's the size a 1911 should have been from the get go.
