1911 guys, opinions please

Watch EE. there is lots of good quality 1911's on there. Smith and wesson makes a very good pistol. Or Norinco. I like having a norinco for all the previous reasons. 45 is a lot more than 9mm to shoot. Leave the 9mm for the ladies. Get a 45 auto
 
Norinco 1911s aren't garbage, they aren't fit properly is all. The frames and slides are made of tool steel that really is hard to beat, if you know 1911s a Norinco really isn't something to turn your nose up at. Once properly fit, I'd put it up against just about anything.
Having said that, I'd steer away from advising it be a first pistol as it will frustrate someone new to the sport. So; to the OP, S&W make a good 1911, so does Sig if you can get over the whole external ejector thing. Myself, I would recommend Kimbers, Rugers or any of the high dollar guns...a reliable 1911 will run you $1,200+ these days. (and psst...stick with .45 acp. You'll never regret that! 9mm; probably.:p) Also...series 70, and no, you can't tell a difference between it and the 80 series unless the slide is back.
 
I'm in this boat right now. Had an NP29 for about a week, I REALLY took to the 1911 platform, and decided I wanted a good, but perhaps not GREAT entry-ish level 1911. Many, many hours of research later, an STI Trojan 9mm is in my near future.
 
I had a Springfield RO 1911 ( 9 mm) but it just didn't cut I for me. I now have a CZ 9 mm and it's all good. I'm now looking at getting a 45 1911 but not sure which one. I've narrowed it down to 3 . S&W, Sig, and Colt. $1200 range. But I think I want a 70 series because I've read they're better. So far as I can tell , only Colt ( out of those 3)produces a new 70 series ???

I have seen some "tuned" Norcs that were pretty nice. Good staring point. I guess model depends on what you want it for. Bill Wilson likes the commander length, but maybe, at the bottom end, 5" might make more sense. Easier to make 100%
 
What's the general consensus on the SAM military enhanced in .45? I can't find any reviews on that specific model, but the price is attractive. Even if I have to go the tactical capital route to get it home

Although I cannot speak to that model, if you're considering buying new, I'd really think about it. Wolverine has warned the next shipment from SAM is going to have a drastic increase in price. It has been suggested it'll be upwards of 30-40%. They, like the RIA and Seraphim pistols, are not the deal they once were.
 
Don't be afraid to buy the norinco . I have a np 29 in blue and 9mm and it shoots good and groups tight. I got about 500 round through mine now and no problems . Sights are standard 3 dot novak type and target acquisition feels pretty natural . I changed the grips on mine but those black rubber ones aren't that bad functionally wise.
mec gar mags fit no problem
The best is if you can check it out in person , feel the end of the barrel and see if the bushing is tight and check the barrel hood to breach face, make sure the no more than 1-2 thou clearance .

All Standard 1911 9mm parts fit should you want to change a few things

go to your local shop and feel them out if you can . even better shoot some .
I have two 1911's i 45acp. norinco and dominion arms. some parts switched out but go bang everytime.

1911 are like fine cheese.
The price is attractive to buy no name, but when you get the cheese home and it just doesn't taste right....

I'm just dead set against a beater gun as a work horse!
I wouldn't trust a 600$ pistol over a 1200$ when your going to run 10k rounds a year.
Not without a full backup ready.

If its for plinking only, well.... How little/much vanity you have is the only thing to stress over!

Big thing with 1911's. If they are not in spec, then you didnt buy a honda, you bought a hondo. And parts are not the same.
Some cheaper brands are offspec and most/all parts will require alot of fitting.
 
Norincos are'nt bad pistols. you have a choice . save up $800 to $1000 dollars to punch holes in paper or spend $300 to $400 on a Norinco and lighten up the trigger in time and punch holes in paper. I was shooting a Norinco 45 last night and I hit the paper everytime. if you roll your own then that's great. you'll save alot of money.

shoot cast .45. 9mm is between $15 and $19 a box of 50 and .45 is $27 to 30 something a box. I get bord shooting a 9mm alot faster than a 45. good luck in your choice.
 
With regards to a .45, I initially bought a SAM commander 1911 for the price, and it was a great shooter. In the back of my mind, I wanted government size. Bought a Norc 1911. I shot it a few times, didn't like it much due to the gritty trigger and rough slide to frame finish. I manually works the slide over the frame without the recoil spring and it seemed better. Eventually I sold it and bought a Colt 1911 combat elite for $650. Awesome shooter. Look into the m&p 45 line. Great pistols at a decent price - I know it's not a 1911.
