I just bought a used Springfield 1911 GI and I am having hammer bite problem. Is there anyway to eliminate it?

Thanks

Keep in mind that adding a beavertail is not a matter of simply swapping parts. Even the ones that are advertised as "drop-in" usually require some fitting (which means filing away metal). Unless you know exactly what you are doing, this is a job for a gunsmith.

So anyone know is there any good gunsmith in Vancouver Area that can supply the parts as well as fitting the breavertail and hammer.

Until you get the grip safety replaced, put a band-aid or strip of tape around the web area before you shoot. That will at least prevent the blood from flowing in the short term (the voice of experience).

Another thought: you may want to consider a beavertail (which looks nothing like a beaver's tail to me, btw) with a "memory bump" -- the additional bump near the bottom of the safety. Because I grip the gun very high while shooting, the beavertail can get pushed up and its bottom pushed out from the frame -- something that would not happen with the standard grip safety. This actually renders the gun safe while you're gripping it. Kind of irritating when you apply pressure to the trigger to break the shot and nothing happens. The memory bump provides an extension to help keep the grip safety pushed in.

I have the same problem and plan on getting one with this feature.

+1 for the memory bump... I've had it happen 2 times now and it kinda sucks so im thinking about getting a mem bump beavertail. Can anyone recommend a good brand?

Also Smoking gun FX in coquitlam hoooked me up with my DE recently they are good, my friend Roy does really good work on 1911s but he cant sell parts but he does good work if you can get the parts.

Hammer Bite

In my experiance a flat mainspring housing solves the same problem that the Memory bump on the Grip Safety does. Allowing a high hold and still applying the grip safety.

Mine's flat, too, and it the beavertail can still get moved to the safe position. This is why some IPSC shooters tape or otherwise permanently hold the grip safety in. I personally don't like deactivating safety features on a gun, so I don't do it, but I can understand it. On the other hand, hammer bite sucks. I shoot two .45's: a Series 70 Gold Cup for bullseye, and a Valtro for IPSC. The Colt has a standard grip safety and the Valtro a beavertail. I never get hammer bite with the Colt as long as I'm shooting it one-handed, but use two hands and the blood flows. Shooting two-handed, the Gold Cup bites but the grip safety works perfectly. The Valtro never bites but the grip safety does lever into the safe position while shooting once in a while.
