Hey guys, I`m new here and it`s my first post. I`ve been lurking for some time, reading posts and what not. I still haven`t decided on a 1911 that I want. so here is a list of what I think would make me happy.

Decent finish
accurate
reliable
under $800

I`ve got my eye on a para gi expert at $700 here in alberta. The others I`ve found are the Norinco, but i`m not sure if the finish will be what I want. Tanfoglio 1911 for $565 but haven`t found any writings on this gun. Then there is Taurus pt1911 at about $850 which is stretching it. there is also another that off hand I cant remember what name it is but it`s Turkish, is about $650 and can be had at p&d in edmonton.

I dunno...this is my first hand gun and I don`t want to be disapointed with it. I did look at a spectacular smith and wesson with laser grip for $1000 but I think its out of my price range.

Help:cheers:

I am in the same situation as you. The brands I am looking at are Springfield, Norinco and Para-Ordinance. Might also get a used Colt. I would look on the equipment exchange and try to pick up a good deal.

The turkish one you refer to is called a "Regent" Frontier has them for about 600, from what I have read you are better off with a norinco.

If its your first .45 and you guys are on a budget, get a Norc (even a used one) and shoot it lots (accurate and reliable). As mentioned in another post, once your done with it, you'll most probably will be able to get most of your investment back via the EE if you take good care of it. The Police and Sports version (Retail - $349??) will have more bells and whistles with the finish much better than previous versions that came out 2-3 yrs. ago.
My thoughts on the others being considered: stick with the Springfield and a used Colt. Para's really look good but after owning a couple, they may need minor work depending from piece to piece. On a Colt and Springfield, the basics are all there and ready to go.
It great to see guys shopping, especially for a 1911. As you get more opinions from others, don't forget to post what the final purchase will be. Good luck shopping and Happy shooting!!!!:canadaFlag::rockOn:

Buy the Colt Terry has listed in the EE. I realize it is more than you want to spend, but you will continue to buy and sell 1911s until you own a Colt. Do it now and save yourself the time. You will not be disappointed.

He's out of stock currently, but Armco sells new Norc 1911s that are tuned up bt him. Search around, you'll find lots of people here with nothing but good to say about these pistols. Including me.

Norc 1911A1 pre-tuned from Armco.

For just over $800 go for an STI Spartan from Armco.

ok I`ve found a couple more dealers and guns here in alberta. I`m definitly a fondle and buy type guy, I`d really rather no order and wait for it to arrive in the mail or somthing. I will order from a gun shop and wait for it to arrive there, but I still have to fondle the exact model or brand before I commit to ordering something.
So that being said, I`ve found :
springfield mil spec parkerized ($750)
auto ordinance parkerized us army one clip though($675)
sti trojan ($875)
norinco police ($385)and standard ($389)
para ord gi expert ($695)
I also found that S&W sw1911 stainless with a laser grip used for $1000. all of these I can fondel here in alberta!
Decisions...decisions! Now I`m thinking the sti at $875 is getting out of my price range, I did fondel the S&W the other day and it pretty near gave me a hard.....:adult: well you know...but for $1000? is that a good deal or not?
I`d like to be able to fondel the Springfield, maybe in a few days. So between the Spingfield, the Auto Ord, and the Norinco can you guys tell me the pros and cons?
I`m pretty new to handguns but have been shooting rifles for 25 years I bought volume 1 of gun digests 1911 book the other day and have been going over it but I`d like more info from guys who have them and shot them. I`m not sure that I`ll buy another hand gun ever, the wife is gonna lose it when I come home with any of these guns regardless of price:kickInTheNuts:.... do I care?....no!

RT, On what you've seen, the #1 deal maker, although more than your budget is the STI Trojan. At $875 you are getting a hell of a deal. Actually wanted to buy one from the EE and it was going for more than $1,000 USED!!!!
Of the three you're considering, haven't fired an AO so am sure the rest of the guys here will let you know. Between the Springfield and the Norc, for the price difference I'd go with the Norc (whichever model suits you). There will be enough left over to buy upgrades and even have a smith do some work for you. After these mods it will still be less costly than the Springfield but it will fire as good or even better.
Brought my Norc to the range yesterday and fired her together with my Colt Gold Cup. At 7 mtrs. can hardly tell the difference in accuracy. At 15 mtrs and over, its only the Norc's roughness (my action is bone stock-for now!!!) that puts it at a disadvantage. Mind you, the Colt also has no internal mods - yet!!! As with all my guns, prefer to fire all of them "stock" for at least the first few hundred rounds and once I get "it", I save for mods and add-ons.
As for the SW, a couple of hundred bucks is going to the cost of the laser grips alone. A nice accessory but for us Canadians with no propect of getting CCW, I find it a temporary novelty. Better to look as an SW with no aftermarket add-ons.
Take your time. As you mentioned, it may be your keeper 1911 and you're going about it the right way by actually holding them before the purchase. Better yet, next time your at the range see if other anyone is shooting a 1911 and ask them to share their thoughts. CGN is only one source of feedback. Use your shooting envirionment to help you further.
BTW, if the wife ever decides to make your gun life slightly uncomfortable, let her know that its guns your are fondling - not other females!!!!!
Enjoy your shopping, let us know the final decision and give us a range report. Happy Shooting!!!:canadaFlag::rockOn:

decisions

You've handled the Norc. It would be well worth the wait to keep an eye on Armco's site and scoop up the next tuned Norc that Gunnar offers.
But I find myself agreeing that you'll buy and trade until you own a colt. Fondle a few of those. I wouldn't part with my Gold Cup for love or money.
Definitely let us know what you end up with...remember the pics!

If I was a noob just starting out in the 1911 game I'd go for an STI Spartan from Armco in either .45ACP or 9mm [now that the 9mm's are coming available].... or just go for it and get both.

You're on a budget for the gun itself but what about the ammo? It doesn't come much more expensive for mainstream handgun ammo than .45ACP. Even reloading for it comes with a price since the bullets are heavier and thus cost more per unit and more to ship if you order from distant suppliers.

If you decide on a Norc then go with Armco's offering. For what he chages over the base cost it's a bargain for the work done to it. And with many dozens of threads extolling the virtues of his tuning you can't go wrong.

And then if you get bitten by the 1911 as a results of handling and shooting the Norc bug THEN look around and decided which will be your keep forever 1911 if you decide you need a better one.

Well I`ve got the wife convinced....I got the ok.:cheers:w:h:
Now getting back to the real deal here. I seen a used nork, held it and wasn`t very impressed with the finish, maybe a new one is nicer...i dunno. but what I do know is myself, and I know even if it shhots good I still won`t be happy if it has a crappy fit and finish. I may also eventually like to get a 22 conversion or even the mighty .460 ROWLAND:evil: as I can get liscenced to carry for my job...big game guide. I know most people figure you need atleast a 44 mag for bear protection, and from what I read that .460R is comparable. So with that I`m may need a frame and slide that are compatable with the .460R . I`m starting to lean towards the Springfield. I`m not worried about the price of ammo, I`ve found some good deals and in the end I`ll most likely reload for it. It has always gonna be a .45 acp for me! I`ve always wanted a 1911 since I was a young kid, and when I picture a hand gun.......you guessed it......1911. I just want to make the right decision.
I want to stay under $800
I like a nice finish
I want accuracy and reliability
good CS is nice to have.

Thanks for any help,
Ron

Finish

Yeah, Norc's finish is only just OK. I have seen Gunnar at Armco offer Norc's that he had refinished as well as tuned. Polished off all the electropencil markings except the serial number and gave them nice deep, mirror finish blue jobs. His 1911 work really is nice.
But if you can't find/wait for one like that then Springfield's products are pretty good. I'm afraid I'd seriously consider the STI first. They guarantee every gun that leaves their facility will shoot under three inches at 25 yds (I think that's the distance). I worked with a PPC champ and she was sponsored by STI for a while. Her's were race guns but their product is top notch.
