I am new to M1911's so tell me if this is normal. My new Springfield GI magazine follower catches on the forward edge when you push the first round into the mag. I supppose I could file it back a bit but would that be a normal tweak? Or should I just leave it alone and adjust my loading technique...

I'd say just adjust your loading technique. If your gun still functions properly, and you are having no other problems, then just leave it as is. If it gives you problems, then you need to reevaluate the situation.

Yep, just modify your technique so that when your loading the round your pushing the follower down and backwards at the same time. That should drop the rear of the follower so that the front doesnt catch on the front of the mag.

Of course there is the off chance its a defective mag too, but I have seen what you have described before and all I have done to correct it is what I described above.
