Hi I am new to semi autos and was looking to change the mag release on my 1911. The old one works fine but I thought I would try an extended length one. According to the Gun Digest Book of Firearm Assembly/Disassembly it doesn't look like that difficult of a job. However before I start I just wanted to make sure that I am not going to lose the retainer and be rushed to emergency with a spring in my eye or something. Does anyone have any tips, or is there anything I should know? Thanks

My recommendation is to go to a slightly longer "TACTICAL" MAG RELEASE not a large headed mag release. I have seen a few mags drop from the gun when fired weak handed with a large headed mag release. But to answer your question goto www.blindhogg.com/gunsmithing the site tells you all about most of the custom stuff people do to 1911's. Just remember the mag release is not held in with a screw, you only have to turn it a 1/4 or 1/2 turn while pushing in on the release.

Dlask arms ( lower mainland B.C.) makes a couple of really nice styles both blue and stainless. All you have to do is drill and tap your old release button and screw on the extention, or if you take the release button to them they will drill & tap it for you. Don't forget the violet lock tite! M.
