I just ordered my first 1911, a Rock island Armories from ArmsEast. Will any .45 1911 mag work and are there any to stay away from in terms of function or lack of it?

Thanks Richard.

So you're happy with the gun? I didn't want to spend the bank until I know if I really like the platform and RIA seems to offer good bang for the buck.

I am thinking your first 1911 should be a basic model. Why? It will not cost a lot, will leave you plenty of money for ammo, it will allow you to learn what you like/dislike about 1911s, and what you want to change. In the end, take a long look at an RIA Commander. Regards, Richard:D

Go to Brownells website, MecGar out of Italy are top of the line and make mags for atleast a dozen USA companies. European workmanship + quality;)

Davy Crockett, it took me a long time to reach one conclusion. What is that? It is a lot cheaper to buy Uncle Mike's shooting gloves than it is to install an extended grip safety and hammer to avoid hammer bite. All the savings can be better served by buying ammo. Another trick is if you have handguns with heavier trigger pulls, shoot them first and those with lighter trigger pulls later. Why? lighter trigger pulls spoil you. Regards, Richard:D

Mec-Gar's are good, Wilson Combat is good, McCormic is good...heck, any name brand should do you well. The real question is 10 round or 8 round? Bumper pads or not?

The real question is 10 round or 8 round?

That's a good question. I've only used 7 and 8 rounders with no problems in a Springfield MilSpec. I'm thinking I may want to give IPSC Standard Division a try and a 10 rounder would be the mag of choice I would think.

Anyone know of any feeding issues with the 10 rounders?,, or pros or cons?

Are the mag wells on all single stack 1911's the same? What about all double stacks? Will any single stack mag fit any mag well if the calibers are mismatched such as would be the case in a caliber conversion? What about the Norinco 9mm pistols? Will they take other caliber mags?

If you want mags most of supporters at the top of the page have them. And yes all 1911 mags of any caliber will fit single stack 1911 frames but they will only chamber , fire and eject, if all the other components for that caliber are in that 1911 and then it might take some tweaking for it to be reliable. As for the double stack 1911 wide body frames most have to have their own mags to work, which could be a problem it the one you own ceases to be in business and you need more mags, but some might be adaptable but I don't know. But it is something to be aware of , when buying a less popular wide body 1911.

I recommend 8 round Kimber ProTac mags (not the stock ones that come with the pistol). They are available either at one of our sponsoring dealers like TSE or direct from Kimber by phone order (don't try to order from them via Internet). They come with 2 size bumper pads or you can use them without.

I do not recommend the PEZ mag on the right as I have had way too many FTF's with them. :D
