Last month I bought my first restricted firearm-- A Kimber Custom Crimson. So far I have put 300 rounds through it and I simply love the gun. However, I do have to scratch my head at Kimber's decision to make the mainspring housing from plastic!? With so much effort put into the fit and finish of this fine 1911, the choice of plastic for the MSH seems like putting cloth seats in Cadillac! Luckily its an easy fix, I plan on finding a stainless steel MSH with the extended mag-well in one piece. Has anyone else here done this? I am looking for the best place to find a good compatible fit--as I hear most 1911 parts are interchangable--and quality as well. Thanks in advance.

My STI Trojan came with a plastic MSH as well. I got a Wilson Combat - 1911 Auto Speed Chute from Brownells. Installed pretty easy, but had to tweak it a bit so the mag would insert and drop freely.

I was just looking at WC and I think that is the one that I would go with. Thier merch makes me feel funny in my pants lol. Was the tweeking pretty minor? would I just need to do a bit of sanding/filing?

Had to remove about .060 from the inside back edge of the magwell. It was intruding into the mag chamber and binding on the magazine. Fifteen minutes of filing, a little emery cloth to smooth it out, and touch it back up with some cold blue. Works great now, and an inserted 8 round mag seats almost flush - so looks much better.

Seems more than doable for even me lol. After seeing a 1911 with that mag-well, one without almost looks incomplete.

I felt the same way when I got my Springfield Armory Fully Loaded, but I never had the confidence to start thinkering with it. I think I might buy a Norc just to get some experience without the fear of Fu****g-up.

My Norinco 1911 came with an excellent steel MSH. I'm simply shocked and dismayed to hear that a premium 1911 would come with a plastic version... :stirthepot2:

In my experience, Brownells will not ship Wilson product to Canada. I know others have different experience, but I've tried and been denied on at least three occasions that I can recall. Best to pick out a few options from different brands before calling in your order.

Edit: Forgot to mention, Dlask sells some quality 1911 parts, maybe check with them.

That is very strange. I have LOTS of WC stuff, all from Brownells. They are licensed to export the stuff and there is no reason it should be an issue, unless the part is more than $100.

I do recommend keeping a Norinco 1911 on hand to experiment with, though...that is exactly what I do. My workhorse Nork has mostly WC Bulletproof insides now; runs well. In my experience they're very much to Colt dimensions.

Plastic MSHs are pretty common these days. Low stress part.

I got mine from Brownells - part number 965-366-001WB. They shipped it pretty quick and I got it in about a week.

Why bother to replace it. I've never had one break yet and nobody really cares if it is plastic or metal. If you really want a metal one, get the Wilson Combat. Get yourself a couple of extra mags instead IMO.

Before you start spending money, decide if you want an arched or a flat mainspring housing. Both come in steel. Also do you want a "race gun" or a combat gun. There is a big difference between the two.
