1911 mods... how hard? Or how costly?

Well, now that I've been bitten by the IDPA bug, I'm looking to make some mods to my Delta Elite to make it run a little better, and not bite my hand every couple hundred rounds of ammo.

So I'm looking at a fiber optic front sight (maybe even a rear sight too) or tritrium (I'd prefer fiber optic, because it looks ###y, but if it's not IDPA legal, so be it) a beavertail safety, and a slidestop safety that's no so snag-prone.

So I'm wondering just how doable this is for a DIY minded fellow with basic tools, or if I'm better off sending it to a 'smith (hey... Gunnar, you paying attention?:D) and what it might cost.
 
the sights and slide stop are easy, and you can do them with care, a good file, brass drifts and a staking tool for the colt front sight...

the beavertail will probably best be done by a smith, you need to machine the frame for the good ones....
 
After looking at the prices at Armco, it looks like it's not all that cost prohibitive to have a 'smith do it all.

Other than Gunnar, can anyone recommend a good 1911 'smith in Western Canada?
 
JOE DLASK,,,, he does all my 1911 work... would not give my personal 1911's or my ar's to ANY other gunsmith on this planet ;) you will be exceptionally pleased ( dlask.com )
 
"...you need to machine the frame..." You shouldn't need to do anything to the frame. You fit the part to the frame.
A beavertail grip safety will eliminate the biting. There are some that are drop in, but as with any drop in part for anything, the fit won't be perfect.
