I recently bought my very first 1911, a 9mm Springfield 1911 Range Officer. Seeing that I'm new to 1911s I was just wondering if there's anything I should know about the platform before I take it to the range. What's the best break-in procedure?

I'm thinking of competing with this gun down the road what mods should I consider doing? I'm already considering changing out the blackout front sight, my eyes aren't what they used to be.

Be careful on disassembly but more importantly on reassembly not to put the "newb" scratch on the frame taking out or putting back the slide stop. :)

Yes, search "1911 idiot scratch" so you're forewarned about how to avoid it. I was warned and have never had a problem, but it could happen easily if you don't know about it.

The famed, or infamous idiot scratch .... there are a lot of experienced 1911 shooters out there who have accidently committed the sin of idiot scratch too.

I'm in the market for a Ruger SR1911 next. Beautiful platform. They do need more TLC than a modern gun and aren't really as reliable in harsh conditions but they're worth it.

How not to get the 'newb' scratch....

You can make a handy dandy device for not scratching your 1911 frame with the slide stop using packing plastic, a pair of scissors & a couple min of clipping. Use a hole punch for the bit that slips over the mag release button:

Ya , I’m an idiot.
I got the scratch on my Stainless Springfield 45acp.
It’s so god darn tight.

Anyway, it’s bugging me, so it’s either I buff it out or redo in a bright nickel finish.

And I’m assuming if buffed, it’ll still be noticeable?

From what I know, I would agree that buffing it would still be noticeable ( maybe even more!) and would leave a bit more shiny spot.
If you re-plate it in nickel, I would think it would depreciate the value on the gun also?

I just pull the thumb safety out just enough for the slide stop/safety plungers to move back alittle then just snap the slide stop in and push the plunger back then snap the thumb safety back in place.
