1911 owners, opinions?

I love these threads:

OP - I wanna buy a choice of X, Y or Z help / opinions please

Everyone - Oh, you need A or B.

Of the choices the OP gave - go for a STI Spartan. I have one ( from Armco ) and it is every bit as good as 1911's owned by buddies of mine - a Colt Gold Cup and a brand new Kimber TLE.

hahahaha that's ok i don't mind alternate suggestions, gotta keep an open mind in life... for most things atleast thank you for your suggestions, Spartan is what it most likely will be! now the waiting game for that little pesky card saying i'm not foolish enough to do something stupid with it.

oh really? is there a 22 conversion that does fit it??

Beats me. However, a lot of 1911 accessories out there are for mil-spec 1911's. As such, they may or may not fit a Spartan and if I hadn't bought the Kimber when I did, that conversion kit would have been little more than an expensive paperweight for me instead of a useful shooting accessory.

And a well-maintained 1911 will last halfway to forever. So even if it's got a good number of rounds through it, it's still going to run like a song if you replace the odd part and keep her well-cared for. So even used, you're looking at a pretty solid gun.

STI sells the old Marvel .22 kit, I would imagine it would work (I can't figure out why the Kimber kit wouldn't)

Neither could I. But it was sitting too far back on the frame and that was enough for me to decide that shooting it would be a bad idea.

I have a the GI Expert... I can only compare it to my Taurus 1911, but I'd have to say I'd recommend the Para. It's light, shoots tightly, and cycles well for a 1911; even hallow points.

Very valid point about the HP rounds.

The Spartan doesn't like some hollow-point rounds. I know mine didn't like them at all, with every 2nd or 3rd round a misfeed.

^ what would cause a Spartan (or some 1911s overall) to not feed HP rounds? are the hollows just too big, or do they result in the overall length being too short to stay where they're supposed to?

I have a Stainless Springfield G.I. and I really like it, it's a good platform to start with and trick out as you go. I also have a Norinco, it isnt a work of art but it still shoots fine and for the price you really cant go wrong. Kimbers are nice too but Ive heard they just spend alot of money on advertising so that people thing they are great, they are nice but my brother has one and it jams almost consistently. Maybe he just needs to clean it and shoot it more. To each their own.
