1911 owners, opinions?

^what he said. Has more features than most $1200-1500 1911's and is rock solid, for dirt cheap, considering. Here is mine:

I've got a Norinco, but I bought it to mess with, so its always apart and I'm trying some tinkering trick I've read about or whatever I feel like doing.

I plan on a Springfield next, and not really messing with it.

I've heard alot of negative about Kimbers recently, if I were to buy a 'fancy' 1911 I'd go with a Taurus.

I have a SA GI that's had issues since day one. Took it apart to have a real close look at everything. Pretty roughly made. Maybe it came off the assembly line on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon... I dunno. Google tells me that I'm in the minority, however, as most owners love them and have no problems. If you want a 1911, my advice is that you spend a little (okay, a lot) more money and get a really good one. It just isn't worth the time searching for mags your pistol will like, polishing feed ramps, etc. unless you're into that sort of thing as a hobby unto itself. And for every story about the $500 1911 that runs without a hitch, there's another story about the $2000 jam-o-matic. So play the odds. In the end I think you get what you pay for with the 1911 platform. The common wisdom these days seems to be that Springfields are about the best overall... STI gives very good value for the money... and Colt and Kimber have had quality control issues, even with their top-of-the-line models. But of course, YMMV.

Even if you get bone stock Spartan from say, Freedom, it won't need anything done to it.
But I did add D/T mag release with button to mine and re-sprang it too :D

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I'm not so sure about the 'common wisdom' leaning toward Springfield, quite simply the warranty service requires you to ship a firearm to another country (not all that friendly). WRT the $500 gun that shoots perfectly - that's why you buy from Gunnar at Armco, it's always nice to know a skilled pistolsmith has gone over your gun before it gets shipped so you won't end up with nasty surprises like a crisp 18 pound trigger, or an extractor that won't. Every factory can make a "bad" gun, having a second level of quality assurance means it's highly unlikely to happen to you, and if it does you can get it fixed, without sending your gun to a foreign country.

^ does Armco actually do anything to the STI guns, though? i know they're famous for tweaking and "going over" the Norinco stuff, but what treatment do the STI guns get? or are we just assuming that he does the same thing to ALL the guns regardless of brand?

Good question cause I don't think anything is done to the STI's except maybe checked over to make sure its ok.

hahahaha well i think i'm set with the Spartan, now the waiting game for my RPAL and will have one thanks everyone for their suggestions, and i must say this is the best place to look for a gun i've had 12 PM's in 2 days since i posted on EE i was looking for a 1911 all very friendly and informative. CGN is by far the best forum on the net! people here are great and helpful! and you don;t feel like they are out to rip you off, i'm impressed and am suggesting to others to become involved in this great site! Cheers everyone!

cool! are you buying new or used from the EE? i haven't yet poked my head into EE.

armco is the way to go from the above dealers, great to deal with and they come with a warrenty from armco as well as the factory one. i have owned a spartan, a nork and a springfeild. i loved my spartan the best. it was the most accurate. sold both my springfeild and my spartan (shouldn't have sold the spartan ) still have the nork, but that is only because it was my first restricted and it has sentimental value to me. still a good shooter though. cheers

thanks for all the comments... i think for price alone, the spartan takes the lead. so follow up questin... of the above dealers... who to buy from????

I'd recommend a Kimber too. I know, they're pricier but they're worth it.

I used to own a STI Spartan and I loved it, sold it to finance the Kimber, truth be told.

The only thing I noticed is that they're not compatible with all accessories, such as the Kimber .22 conversion kit that's supposed to fit on all mil-spec 1911's.
