I need someone who is good with 1911's to fix a safety problem. My ambi safety moves with recoil and partially applies itself if I don't keep my thumb on the safety.
It clicks on and off nicely but doesn't stay off. Les Baer says it is a problem with the "safety detent" and it needs a little dremel work to fix it. I am not sure I want to go through the hassle of all the paperwork of sending it back to the US.

"Is the gun still under warrantly?"

Yes it is. The company I bought it from said that they would send it back if I was not satisfied. I can just learn to always shoot with my thumbs on the safety or wait for all the paperwork to be done and send it back and wait God knows how long to get it fixed.

I was thinking that a third option might be to have a good pistolsmith here fix it. But if it is a tricky repair then I would rather send it off and let Baer fiddle with it. That way if he dremels off too much material then it's his mess to fix.

I just don't know the magnitude of the problem and how tricky it is to fix. I thought I would contact a few places like Gunco and Dark (others?) to see what they think.

"Check with Les Baer, and see if he has an authorized warranty depot near you."

Unfortunately , Baer has just started selling his 1911's and AR's through Ronin in Ontario and he doesn't have anyone in this Country that services his products.

Rodger Kotanko (Dark International) is out your way.. He'll fix you right up

I think this is your best bet as well. All that is required is for him to put a small dimple in the safety where the detent sits to hold it there a little more firmly in the "off" position....it's not a major modification....

Ask Les if it would void your warranty to have a licenced professional gunsmith do this simple repair. If not, take it to Rodger Kotanko (Dark International) since he is the closest to you.

If it does void the warranty, bite the bullet and send it back to Les. You paid a lot of money for that fine gun and it should be working 100%. Let the manufacture fix it and keep the warranty intact if you can.
